    The french ''linky'' so-called 'smart' meter is actually referred to by the national energy distributor installing them (enedis, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EDF...) as a data collector (''capteur de donnĂƒÂ©es'').

    Its sole aim is to remote-control the user installation, and, accessorily, provide remote metering.

    The CEO of enedis proudly describes his outfit is a "a big-data player":

    linky contains a circuit breaker which is therefore upstream of the house main CB, thus the remote operator can shut down or start up all or part of the user installation without having any knowledge of the local conditions (with all the danger that that represents).
    The control module offers seven main targets:
    hot water / electric heating / heat pumps / aircon / electric vehicle charging &/or battery banks; PV injection.

    So as borpin says, these things can force a local PV install to shut up if the grid is getting saturated...

    I sympathise with the feeling, but it isn't actually true is it? Because the capital cost of the battery outweighs the ongoing cost of electricity, even at daytime rates. What it actually does is allow rich people to further subsidise poor people by reducing the overall energy cost by reducing necessary peak generation capacity.

    Cannot see how it reduces energy-usage.

    Also, by all accounts, battery-making sounds like a pretty filthy process.
    Not to mention having to dig up large areas of the planet (Siberia, S. Korea, Japan...) to find cadmium.
    Into the bargain, this unit also employs a seemingly new element called cadamium - no doubt THAT comes from Canadia...
