    Hi folks.

I'm trying to source some truss nail plates for a workshop roof I'm making. The only ones I can find are either perforated sheet steel which you have to individually nail, such as these. These would be ok, but it's a heck of a lot of nailing.

Or lightweight truss type ones which are "non structural" as below

    http://www.strongtie.co.uk/products/detail/mending-plates/149#tab-installation

I want the second type , but decent quality suitable for trusses. I've looked for ages but can't find a supplier. Anyone here know where I can get some?

    Thanks in advance
    Mike

As I understand it, the sort that are nailed in need individual nailing either with a hammer or with purpose-designed nail guns. My carpenters had a lot of tools but still nailed them with hammers.

Plates with teeth are designed to be pressed in, usually by hydraulic presses. They can't be nailed because they don't achieve their rated strength that way.

    But I may have misunderstood.

I've used the 'teeth plates' (for want of a better word) before, and smacked them in with a lump hammer, probably not ideal but it works OK. I'll go with nail plates and square twist nails if I have to.

But as I understand it you're outside the terms of the BBA if you do that. Building control ought to fail it if they discover it. I think the issue is that the repeated hammering can enlarge the holes so the teeth pull out more easily.

That's a good point and possibly why they are not readily available to Joe public.

FWIW, here is a page explaining the industrial process for producing trusses.
It confirms what DJH says above about pressing...

(Apologies for it bean in French...)

Items 5 & 6 of the diagram says: "locating of connectors" and "pressing of connectors"
