    Have you got any suggestions as to how to achieve this quality assurance, without massively increasing building costs? A few photos is at least an uncomplicated and inexpensive way to improve on how things otherwise are.

    Well, quality is due in any event; it is not a question of increasing price, it is a question of providing the service purchased and ensuring the merchantability of the thing sold; a question of law.

    If somebody sells you polluted cereal, or a bad car, you are entitled to compensation.

    I would love to one of the big house builders taken to court publicly for selling a bad house due to the problems we are discussing here.

    For referbishments we are long way off seeing that,

    Perhaps not quite. The price builders set (new, referb or extensions) is done knowing they can cut corners and do some things on the cheap. Once they are stuck with giving a quality job the price will go up because they want (need?) their profit margin and a quality job - or even building to the specs. - will cost more than todays practice.

    So it looks like one is saying that non-quality is a standard: in any other field that would be considered corrupt practice !

    What makes the construction/building industries so different from any other, say, automobiles, petrochemicals, medical, aerospace ?

    There is no substitute for quality assurance, quality control, supplier confidence, consumer savvy.

    All the other examples you give take place in factories or other purpose-designed facilities. Construction takes place in the raw world, to create those facilities. Though for obvious reasons there are people trying to move as much of construction into factories as possible.

    The other very significant difference is that with construction you don't generally get to perfect the design, and the production process, through prototypes and iterations, and then reap the rewards for that time investment by rolling out multiple copies of the product in a streamlined and time efficient process. And this is even more so when dealing with refurbs, extensions and the like.

    this thread has reinforced my view what a sensible form of building it is to build with single skin masonry, concrete block, and render inside and out for two airtight layers. You can't go wrong.

    For windows and other joints the best method is susrely iso chemies tapes which permanently try and press outward. Otherwise I am using blower proof which looks superior to tapes in everyway

    I didn't know about that blowerproof stuff until now. Does it really work? I'm sceptical that it would survive the kind of movement/settlement that's not uncommon over time.

    It'll probably handle it better than a S+C parge coat.

    My current plan for AT layer is to use blowerproof over joints between parge coat. Not *actually* asked about that to their technical yet but....
