Looks like this could be the first useful thing the EU has done:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/12/29/standard_charger/

Following on from the lead of the magnificent Chinese! The EU is years behind but welcome eeven so.

No more taking off on holiday with 5 different chargers!

So does that mean I have to go out and get a new phone, had it for nearly 8 years and never forgotten or lost the charger.

Bit I agree that a standard 'charger port' is useful, just a shame it is that really tiny one that I cannot see and is dead easy to snap.

Well I for one would also welcome a 'standard' charger socket to all devices.

Would/Will make life much simpler, plus being micro USB, means that you can buy cheep stock car chargers, and charge from laptop/computer etc.

The socket isn't the whole story... The charger also has to be capable of delivering the current the device requires. Take the biggest charger (highest current one) with you on holiday.

Only after some particularly egregious crime such as filling the (loaded) freezer with a cocktail of unidentified probably-noxious chemicals, filling the WC cistern with random bathroom stuff to cause foamy overflow everywhere, repeatedly poisoning one's younger sibling with plant-food in his tooth-mug (inadvertently), damaging a brand-new carpet with ferric chloride PCB etching solution, blowing up the electric cooker by turning everything on at once... (I may have gotten away with at least one of those.)
