By the description given it is likely that the system is the remains of a hydraulic ram (hydram) a device for using the flow of a spring to pump a proportion of the spring water to a higher level.

I would be very careful of your "pump" house. If its concrete with proper valves it sounds more like a distribution node for the local water company. It may not be connected to a spring but a reservoir miles away.

    Is it Potable???

Not sure if any of this is of any use - http://www.pssurvival.com/ps/Hydro-Power/Compendium_Of_Small_Hydro-Power_2002.pdf - and I'm not at all technical. But, there appears to be a stack of stuff in here on the basics of small hydro.

Thanks for the additional information, anything that increases my knowledge on the subject is useful. The water was used to feed the manor house but I doubt that it would come up to modern standards for potable water.

I'm afraid that all of my efforts at the moment are being put towards installing breathable insulation into the house and so I'm no further forward with this.

Even if its not "potable" its got to be better using it to flush loo's etc than using tap water. A resource I would love to have.
