Posted By: tonyI don’t think that is stops water vapour.

Why does the description start "A specially formulated sealer providing vapour control"?

May be it is vapour impermeable, sounds like horrible stuff just read through the blurb

I used it in my previous house many years ago, don't recall it being horrible stuff but do recall it was expensive along with their drywall primer. I am impressed with the thermal camera which model is it?

Normal plasterboard and emulsion paint won’t stop the moisture from passing through into the loft.
An alternative to that primer would be to paint all the ceilings with a paint that will act as a vapour barrier eg https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dulux-Easycare-Bathroom-Emulsion-Ceilings/dp/B0038ETHZ4

Tony, this is the chimney, worst photo to show you, it’s from google earth, ignore the jungle, that was years ago, that’s been cleaned out, capped and waterproofed on top, vent at top and vented below

Was a very frosty few nights here and I went up today and there’s still tonnes of vapour getting in! It’s starting to drip again! Even with my new double attic hatch seal!! Also found a crack in the coving in the bathroom, so sealed that too! Just gone around the 3 rooms upstairs, all light penetrations sealed, all switch wire penetrations sealed , all coving crack free! Doing my nut in now!!!
Gotta be some way of finding it!! I’ll set the fan up again later and check for any air leaks

This is the buildup that starts to drip! I get the feeling it’s house air doing it, seems like there’s too much to be migrating through plasterboard!!

Gotta be some sort of test to see where it’s coming from!

I put loft boards down and left a big gap between boards and insulation, these boards cover most of the main bit of the attic and they are freezing cold, so I thought they would be wet underneath as the warm air would touch these first, but they are dry as a chip!!

    Just had a blinding idea!! I wonder🤔
My tado valves have humidity sensors in them, I wonder if I take the 3 valves upstairs and place them in the attic, one at each end and one in the middle, watch the info overnight and maybe one of them will light up first given me a basic idea of which bit gets humid first?

When a cold night is forecast you could lay a sheet of thin clear plastic over the top of the insulation so it sits snug over the insulation. If theres moisture coming through from below it'll condense on the plastic and be visible from above. May help confirm its coming from below??

    Good idea
  1.
I think given the condition of your chimney that's a clear point of investigation. Get you thermal camera up there and look for cold/damp spots

Take some drill samples to see if the chimney is wet... or just use your hand.

Can't see enough moisture escaping from the house into the attic, appears to be a clear roof failing (likely chimney)
  2.
I had a holiday let roof space that was ringing wet here recently and the cause eventually turned out to be a faulty immersion thermostat keeping the HW tank 'on the boil' for as long as the timer was on! This meant steam was venting into the loft via the expansion pipe to the loft-located header tank...
  3.
Martin, that's really dangerous - there have been fatal accidents where the heated water from the overflow heated up the water in the header tank to the point where the plastic tank softened, then it dumped scalding water through the ceiling into the bedroom below.

Immersions are supposed to have dual safety cutouts to prevent this, but I don't think anyone tests them during heating system servicing, and mine was not working when I tested it.

If it turns out not to be from the house, or leaks, considering the westerly location, could it potentially simply be changes in air temp dragging moisture out of the air? I.e, the well vented loft is filled with relatively warm, relatively wet air that's come up the Bristol channel.

A clear, cool night follows and windspeed drops. The tiles/slates rapidly cool and the still warm, moist air inside condenses some if it's moisture out on them.

We live in North Cornwall, a tin shed will sweat with no internal sources of moisture. Worst is when the wind changes direction from West to east. Every object with thermal mass sweats.

Looks like insufficient loft ventilation to me
