    Also, the wall the other side of the door runs into the kitchen proper, it will be impossible (very tricky?) to get full access to the whole length of the cavity from the inside since there is a row of kitchen units with oven and hob etc. Having seen the amount of mortar trapped at the base of the wall, I think I would like to get all this out before filling. The only thing I can think of would be to remove the odd brick from the outside? Wonder what you think about that? Or am I starting to get a little carried away?

    That is OK but could you get at it from the outside corner?

    Yes, that might work well, there are some half bricks that look to be in about the right place. 2 or 3 of those out might also allow me to re-fill with the beads a lot more easily. Thanks again

    I had this as a summer job one year. Taking out every other brick from the outer leaf with a brick hammer & clearing the cavity tray with a bent cavity tie. It's not as bad as you might assume, but don't expect to reuse any of the bricks so removed & make sure you find some matching bricks before you start.

    I chain drill the mortar from above and both ends and then I reuse the brick

    That looks best especially if you get the mortar colour the same as existing.

    I am fascinating by this old thread as I have similar issues in my own home. OP, did you do a before and after airtightness test?

    I have a situation where my plasterboard is attached to block with metal studs/ tracks. The studs show up on some thermal imagines so I guess I will have to drill a hole in them to add expanding foam.
