Posted By: fostertomThat's why it's v helpful, if I 'lazily' ask for it, to be given a summary, or the relevant bit, of some scientific paper that someone (who's comfortable with that lingo) has quoted or linked to - rather than being told to read it myself. It's kind to do so, and adds to nett human understanding.Mostly those sort of documents have a section at the beginning called 'Abstract' that summarises it.

Posted By: bxmanany solution is a great deal more likely if you understand the full situation in which your opponent finds himselfSo that's what it's about - I'm in, and ploughing through it. Very informative, a revision course on stuff only vaguely understood at the time - 2006/2014.

Posted By: Peter_in_HungaryThanks Will. Exactly, Peter. The reactions of Finland, Sweden and Moldova are interesting. You don't hear loud cries for NATO to be dismantled. The US and the rest of the world certainly needs to watch China; I'll agree with that much. But the Soviet Union and its successor states set the scene for Europe just as much as the US did. The US was dragged into this theatre.Posted By: WillInAberdeenTL;DR: the guy argues that: "The US should relinquish Eastern Europe to Russia and focus on containing China instead"
No thanks, we had Russia here before. In 1956 my wife was hiding in a ditch as Russian tanks rolled by.
BTW Hungary had now taken just over the equivalent of 0.02% of its population in Ukrainian refugees and more expected (welcomed). The contrast of reactions to Ukranian refugees to those of other countries is huge. But the UK seems to be making a real pig's ear of the business; I'm not sure what the reason is. Interesting how all other news has disappeared from the screen and we're just treated to hour after hour of 'human interest' stories of family disruption.
Posted By: fostertomWhat would it look like, for either Russia, or America/the West/us to simply disengage - not to finally defeat, not to move to another planet, but to just stop manoevring, telling tales, manipulating and threatening?
Posted By: Peter_in_HungaryIMO doing nothing is not an optionI didn't say to stop defending, self and others, but to stop manoevring, telling tales, manipulating and threatening. Isn't there a difference, or does defending require the latter? If so, there's no way to disengage - but we know that short of the violent one getting locked up, the way domestic abuse ends is if one (or both) parties somehow disengage. Which can and does happen.
Posted By: WillInAberdeenStrongly disagree that the victims and perpetrators of domestic assault are 'equally to blame'Mutual blame is part and parcel, as all parties incl the contrarian talking heads in the youtube are perpetuating. The sign that disengagement has happened, is when 'blame' is no longer felt, as in 'more to pity a mad dog than to fear it' (but still defend if it attacks).
