    Hey all, I'm trying to source a UK based sawmill (softwood and hardwood) who sustainably manage their own woodland and do their own milling - can anyone recommend one? Cheers, Jules

    Where abouts? It has to be local to really make eco-sense - shipping from abroad isn't significantly more transport-carbon intensive than driving it cross-country.

    If in the South West you could try Vastern - they certainly work hard at using UK timber but I don't know if it's all owned by them exactly. Their website says 95% uk grown and sourced within 100 miles of their sawmill:

    I don't believe any sawmill in the UK only mills its own wood. They would either have to have a massive estate or have huge amounts of downtime on the mill. However there are plenty of small local sawmills scattered round the UK and if you are in South Wales / Bristol /Gloucester area I can recommend some.

    If you're in the northern half of Scotland you could try Cromartie Timber. I found them very helpful to chat to a few years ago but didn't finish up buying from them as they don't do grading for structural timber (C16, C24, etc). They don't own the woodlands as such but are directly involved in the cutting off other people's land.

    I can also vouch for Cromartie Timber who I use if ever I want any of my timber sawn. Good quality cut at a reasonable price.
