And I agree absolutely with you Tom, if you ask the right question in the right way you will get the right answer and that both houses need expensive re-rendering sooner rather than later from a builder who both can't AND won't AND there is no effective recourse, is obviously the wrong answer!

I will still post a couple of pics for your collective entertainment but I won't look up the system (not that it will turn out that the system was used I am sure) or try to help further unless specifically approached again.

A point for thought: an analytical and careful read of this thread would reveal that it was pretty rubbish: questions not answered, repeat and still not answered, previous comments not read properly by several people resulting in red herrings, misunderstandings, all in all rather incoherent. I was hoping the collective might of this Forum would help (I sent both houses a link) but in this case not as much as I hoped. But then I got what I paid for!

Ahhhh Peter don't get confused. As I said the last 2 pictures are of the PAINT. This is flaking off in a couple of isolated places and is very much unrelated to the EWI, other than being indicative of the workmanship. I probably shouldn't have made that last post. Obviously through render cracks will dramatically increase the chances of paint flaking but as you can see most of the flaking paint isn't associated with a render crack.

I really don't see a solution that doesn't involve mesh - ie a full system re-render. The extra cost of using render adhesive and mesh over just a new top coat are small when you think of the scafolding costs and the significant risk of finding the top coat alone wasn't good enough and that the whole house needs yet another re-render. Clearly any loose paint would have to be removed first!

Yup - that's the best fix, - however a new top coat could probably be done with ladders and a roller on a broom handle. (depending upon the height of the walls / gables)

Won't a new top coat still need something to stop the cracks reappearing? Like mesh or perhaps embedded fibres?
