    Biff/Tony: if you're grid-tied then using your electricity locally means it isn't available to displace consumption/generation elsewhere on the grid at its full intensity, but you might count the ~7% distribution losses in your favour when you use locally. Wouldn't tip the balance one way or the other on its own IMHO.

    But, it doesn't stop me enjoying my "solar tea" when I do boil water purely with my PV power!

    I have a 2 ring induction hob. While it's great at boiling stuff really fast. Its absolutely RUBBISH at low temps - such as poaching an egg or keeping spag bog warm while we wait for people to come home. I turn it down to 1 - the lowest it will go, and it bubbles for a while, then just gives up and turns itself off. If I turn it up to 2, it either boils over, or gives up again and turns itself off. Have I got a dodgy machine, or does this happen to other people too?
