Thought this report may be of interest to some of you who look to the future

    by Andrew Williams --BRE

This paper reviews some of the key issues surrounding the supply, distribution and use of electricity in domestic buildings. Its primary aim is to consider the electricity system in a holistic, albeit simple, way and identify some of the inter-relationships and inevitable compromises that inherently arise. By adopting a ‘horizontal’ system-wide review the hope is that the paper stimulates an integrated, system-wide debate surrounding how electricity in domestic buildings will evolve in the future. Only by doing this will electricity generation and consumption be harmonised with national targets and future consumer lifestyle need.

About halfway through. Not a bad read, though some of the 'projection' are a bit iffy. That is not unusual as we are nto very good at predicting the future.

Section 7 is quite interesting as it deals with smart metering and communications within the property.

"Increasingly devices and appliances are equipped with various communication protocols and these enable them to communicate inside the building and beyond thereby potentially supporting a future smart electricity strategy."

Excellent paper, use reduction is my favourite quote paraphrased, "use as little as possible and only when needed"

Couldn't see any mention of phase balancing, some savings are possible here at the local level

Talking about smart power management --- clearly this is best done via the web.

Re peak demand shifting, we need this now.

CCS is not going to happen

power distribution via network cabling, would melt it!

Hoping to read the second half later today.

PoN is only for low powered things. Does surprise me that they think that low powered stuff is a problem. 20 5W devices is not really a problem. My fridge is probably more of a concern (monitoring it now but it seems to be on 1/3rd of the time and can draw close to a kW at start up, instantaneous load is infinite).
