My neighbour is having a £40,000 system installed under the RHI scheme to heat his workplace, along with his house and his parents house, all are next to each other.

He's been banging on to us that it's an amazing opportunity, he claims that his initial investment of £40,000 will be recouped quickly, and he expects £200,000 back over the 20 years of the scheme. He say all the local farmers are having similar systems installed, and are being encouraged by the installers to buy a bigger system than they need, and to burn the extra fuel, so they can claim more cash.

He also says you only need an outhouse used for business to get on the scheme

Our property would qualify, as I run a business from a large studio near our house. I currently heat the house with oil (cheap at the moment) and the studio with electricity.

So I'm wondering, is this a 'no brainer'?

All depends on how much thermal energy you use, what the future fuel prices will be, the reliability of the system, tax implications and lost opportunity costs.
Then, when the scheme finished, will you need to replace the system

£40,000 buys a lot of electricity.
Could you not get mains gas put in for that price?

The issue is that you are paid more if you use more heat, you can use the heat to heat a workshop that has all the windows open and still get paid. The heat usage is on a meter for Non-Domestic RHI.

In some part of the country the cost of wood is less then the payment, therefore.....

When there's lots of people living in fuel poverty, I think that the notion of wasting heat is quite simply, disgusting.

If anybody tried designing an aircraft, a powerplant or an AFV on this type of basis, he would (rightly...) get laughed off the planet...
