When I look around my local area there appear to be fewer and fewer house building companies left and talking to friends who use to work for such companies they tell me that the only companies building houses in any volume are the big boys, the PLCs. This set my to wondering has anyone got any data on how many volume (say10or more builds pa) house builders are there left?

There are 3 houses down the road from me that are still not finished after a year. So builders, regardless of size could probably be much more productive.

The only large company building in our local area is Morris Homes, small local builders appear to have given up building and in a lot of cases closed up shop. However there are 3 self builds going on, but self build is not going to cure the housing shortage, assuming there is an actual shortage, other than in London and the SE.

Is it a housing shortage or a high wage symptom.
There isnt really a housing shortage, about enough for 2 people per house, there is a very uneven distribution of house types, price and location.
After the early 90's recession I used to drive 180 miles a day for work, before it I drove 24. Seemed silly that I could earn more money further away.

I still think that we could build housing faster, possibly the small building firms that have held change/improved standards back. The large builders will build to a minimum standard for sure, but that is the standard that is expected.
