    We had to plant 60m of hedging and didn't think about it just got assorted native whips. Now 15 years on I would do things differently. I would avoid anything with thorns, unfortunately that means Hawthorn but especially Dog Rose.

    Lot depends on how you will cut it and clear up the clippings. If you have a friendly farmer with the right kit then you're sorted. If, like me you cut it yourself with a Stihl hedge trimmer then the clear up is a hassle. It typically grows 3-4ft per year. I generally cut mine to chest height in January when most of the leaves have gone. Then pile up the cuttings and wait a few months before burning them (typically three bonfires dotted along the hedge).

    We specifically chose as many things with thorns as possible, to help keep intruders out (people & deer mainly). I don't have a problem when trimming; I just use a thick pair of leather gloves and wear an old ski jacket (since I don't have a leather jacket).
