    Verandas were very common on houses in years gone by, why have they gone out of fashion?

    Conservatories...

    Like most things money has something to do with it I think. It would seem to me that a conservatory would add more value to the property therefore a better investment and it would also be easier to secure credit to build one in the first place.

    They're in fashion with me, I've got verandas on my new build. Good for shading and sitting under.

    Perhaps more a climate thing. Over here they are still popular, actually more like covered patios, when you have 30+ deg and you want to sit outside then some shade is very welcome, we have one and this time of year most meals are there as is any meeting of guests. In the UK I suspect a conservatory would have more use, whilst here a conservatory (as per typical UK construction) would be unusable for most of the year due to excessive heat or cold

    The colonials built themselves climatically unsuitable English-style villas wherever they went, sweltering under tin roofs in hot/humid climates - and then nostalgically reimported climatically unsuitable 'native' features with 'native' names (Verandah) when they came home to die!
