Several councils have installed expensive automatic sorting plants from Aus mining industry technology, which can do amazing segregation of wastes into reclaimable stuff. The technology is there, but it's costly/not fashionable or whatever. Neither landfill nor burning is necessary these days, or getting less so.

We can learn to do as much, or more and better, using a fraction of the energy we're presently lazily addicted to - a fraction that can be readily supplied by renewables.
