It's exactly the dropouts caused by short-duration automatic network switchovers that are my problem here. We get far more of them than I've ever seen before and I find them a real nuisance.

I don't think the suggestions about the behaviour can be quite right. Whatever system already knows the phase of the mains at the time the power goes down. It has to for microgeneration to work. And it causes a lot more inrush current and weird power excursions to restart an induction motor than to keep one running. UPS systems manage to keep continuous power. I can understand there might be a phase matching problem when restoring power; I don't know anything about how that is handled.]]>

They take a mains input (e.g., from the “grid”, a generator or an RV or boat's shore-power connection) and pass it through while at the same time charging a battery and taking power from the battery to boost or, if it disappears, replace the mains input. They'll take over in 20 ms so basically only missing one mains half cycle which won't be noticed by any computer or similar power supply.

AIUI (from a video about them) they'll automatically resync with the mains when it comes back before using the mains input.]]>

My bad, G83 is superseded by G98.]]>

Yes, thanks. I need an AC-coupled battery because I have a microinverter-based PV system. I believe the Tesla Powerwall can provide backup during grid outages but the economics don't yet make sense for me. But it does seem that such systems are possible and are not prohibited by regulation.

What I still don't know is whether there are any systems that do have a 30-second downtime, and what revor meant by his 30 second comment?]]>

I presume you've looked at their web site? It appears to be available but mainly in America and Japan and only by negotiation with the company. I suppose you could see if they have any interest in your project?]]>

And I expect it's significantly more expensive than regular lead-acid cells, both because of the cost of manufacture and a desire to extract a premium price. Hence their search for niche applications like hybrid EVs - not regular cars and not regular EVs, just hybrid EVs and only a subset of those.]]>
