Vana seems to be 18 a roll.. I guess a machine lightly running a Stanley knife down the back of 30m of tape is worth 8 euro all day long.]]>

It'd have to be *very* lightly!

I think I only have one roll of Profil (Edit - I checked - It's about one-and-a-third rolls). I do not need it, but prob not much use to you.]]>

None at TP? Screwfix? Toolstation?, Ridgeons?, Wickes?, Jewson? etc?

None of Siga, ProClima, Isocell, Dafa/Isover, Dupont, Unger-Diffutherm (that's 6 manufacturers - there may be more) available in a bloody shop!

No-one found a local source in Cambridge yet?

Also when I first bought profil it had two tear-off strips so you could use it 50:50 or 25:75. Are those options still available or is it only 25:75 now (all my recent tape has been like this).

(And yes I've run out and resent the fact that I need to order a week in advance!)]]>

I'm not sure of the current situation, but I know it changed for the worse whilst I was building. Also there are types of profil available on the continent that are not imported here. I switched to the Siga equivalent for some things. And Siga is available locally to me - in a village somewhere near Sudbury, IIRC.]]>

I'm assuming that bulk transport to the merchant is more efficient than the one-or-two tapes posted to me, so minimising that last stage would be best. I could be wrong. Low-carbon distribution is a large subject.]]>

Most of them haven't got much choice. An office co-worker who is just psyching himself up for buying a house (in/nr Cambridge) was grumbling that he resents paying a truly stonking amount of money for something that he knows is likely to be shoddy. But he's not really the sort to want to self-build, and self-build plots in/nr Cambridge are hard to come by so it would take years, even he was keen.

The current govt have at least tried to make self-building easier and more normal, so I guss that is (a bit of) progress]]>

And it's light blue rather than dark blue. But delivery from Germany costs less than from ecomerchant (Bristol?), which seems a tad perverse. Funny old world. Lower-carbon to get it from the UK, I suppose.

+1 for this. At first I thought the roll Nick sent me had faded in the sun or something, as all my profil was 25:75 and dark blue when my UK guy sent it, but Nick's (and the extra roll I ordered from baunativ when I got the Unitape) was light blue (and 3 part and as you say, more like 40:40:20)

The current government at least now acknowledge that the biggest barrier to self build is administrative: planning departments that say no and to a greater extent, mortgage providers that say no

All the "forcing councils to make self build l;and available to anyone who wants" in the world will do no good if the anti-self build culture persists in the financial world

"Yeah", I said "but then I wouldn't have a 280 square metre conversion with 100sqm of glass, that costs me 30 quid's worth of electricity a month to run the heating system"

"But how much have you spent on all that guff, and on the heating, and kingspan, and on a mortgage while you've not been living in it and enjoying it.."

There'll never be agreement, of course. From his viewpoint I've spent tens of thousands needlessly - I should have just put a big oil boiler in like he did with his 4 bed detached, that had 125mm of kingspan in the ceiling and a bit of rockwool in the walls.
And I'll always see his point, I just chose my way, and I see there's not a chance in hell that Barratt would have done the same]]>

Ah, sorry for that surprise. For my part I had not, till last week, seen 'UK market' Profil in the 'denim blue'.

It's all getting painted anyway - I tape my windows to my membrane, but ultimately my plasterboards stop 10mm short of the window frame and there's a black (painted) gap all the way round to frame the window (a "shadow gap") because I like the effect and as a bonus it thermally disconnects my plaster from my windows to reduce the chance of it all going mouldy. Hopefully.

He keeps asking me if there's a black rubber gasket that's going in the gap to finish it off..

Some compromises have to be made when the planning insist the windows are mounted in the stonework and the timber frame inner leaf gives all the thermal performance..]]>
