    Should we be building in lintels like this?

    Would it be better, cheaper, easier and thermally more efficient to use an RSJ and a separate external lintel?

    Why would you want to use this? tradition?

    It was when I put it in, I don't know how to turn it round, in my computer it is correct way round. :(

    There is a setting for 'Auto Rotate' you need to switch off.

    where am I looking for that? computer, picture editor, gbf?

    on mine the picture I uploaded is landscape

    Usually in either the camera settings or the editing software settings.
    In the editing software I use (Irfanview) it is in the Option-->Properties-->JPG/PCD/GIF
    Just a case of unticking the Auto-rotate according to EXIF info

    It is the EXIF info that holds the information about how the camera was held, so you may be able to do it there as well.

    Strange to say, tony's first one is correct for as-installed orientation - as pictured it's lying on the ground 'on its back'.

    It seems to change orientation depending on the machine used to view it on.

    Here's the image with the EXIF data stripped out. I think it's not the intended way round but should at least display consistently for everybody whether or not the software in use takes note of the EXIF orientation parameter.

    I used jhead (http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/) with the -purejpg switch to modify it. Seems like a handy program.

    The version of Firefox on my machine seems to display it in one orientation when it's shown in the context of the thread and another using “View Image” to show it in its own tab.

    never seen one of these, just wondering what is the purpose of the insulation -- to stop furry (or feathered) things running along it ?

    When I start thinking about it I reckon it is going to collect condensation from the warm interior of the building and condense it on the underside of the sloping part of the 'tray' and this will wet the window head and cause rust, wet quilt and problems generally. (Weep hoes won't help as they will only take away water from on top)

    When started my build, block and wide cavity, similar to Tony's house/ Denby Dale, all the merchants looked at me as if I had 2 heads when they realised the cavity was so wide, and then struggled to find any alternatives to boot lintels!
    Same when people were told I wasn't dot and dabbing Plasterboard.
    No one even gave it a thought that there was a cold bridge on boot lintels.
    So, in answer to Tony, no we shouldn't be doing it, but most people wouldn't have a clue that it's wrong so think it's OK to do it.
