Idly browsing round I see, for example, that one can get a 16kw Samsung monobloc ASHP for 2500 quid. To buy a 16kw daikin split pump, it's 2500 for the indoor unit and 2500 for the outdoor unit. The 16kw dimplex mono is 4k, the Panasonic 12kw tcap is 4k and a 16kw mitsi ecodan is 5k

Ok, so most manufacturers are knocking at 12-16 kW pumps at around 4 to 5 k, why is the samsung half that?

Seems like you get a very good price on the Samsung unit in the UK. A quick Google suggests that in most European markets it is priced at £4K-£5K.

Is at because it's no good for our climate then? Doesn't have a defrost facility or something?

You need to compare Apple's with Apple, maybe the best thing would to decide if you need a split or a mono, then what size you require, what features you consider appropriate go your application, then download the specification sheets for each one and compare like with like.
