    Hi folks,

Anyone used ScotVu windows, supplied by IDAW and advertised as designed for the Scottish climate? Our timber frame supplier uses this company; we would have liked to use Nordan because they are tried & tested & everyone up here uses them, but are a little tied into the timber frame company at his stage. Have seen the Scotvu windpws and they look up to the job (our self-build is in a very exposed spot) but our builder hasn't heard of them so if anyone has experience of them I'd appreciate an opinion. Specifically the reversible range which don't have the ugly aluminium strip which for some reason is standard on the tilt & turn range. Any info much appreciated.

Lots more Scandinavian-type manufacturers coming out of the woodwork now! Tell us how prices work out - the target is £255/m2 avail from Russell.

Yes - and its high time manufacturers here in the UK caught up with Scandinavian quality. I'm keen to support a Scottish company trying to do this with new products and ranges so I'd like to give these guys the custom, but at the same time I really need the windows to work in our horizontal rain! Can't afford to be the guinea pig, hence the plea for info. I guess nobody will have tested these for long anyway as its a new product (I think).

Re price Fostertom, yes we apparently are getting a good deal from IDAW through the TF company (i.e. calcs based on what we would get knocked off the kit if we source windows elsewhere), but this probably doesn't reflect the real price we might pay independently. Of course price is important, but I'd rather pay a bit more for windows that really work and last. Anybody out there snug and dry behind ScotVu windows - please let me know! Thanks

OK, windows sorted - after a trip to Aberdeen, we played safe and went for NorDan. Cost a little more but the quality is excellent and tried & tested in the Scottish climate. I seem to remember some people having problems with NorDan orders in other threads, but they were very helpful, did a rapid quote, and have given us a good deal for our new build (13 windows, 2 patio doors & 1 glass security door), 45sqm works out at £263/sqm (ex VAT) which I think is PDG. And I got both front & back doors from their 'bargain bin' for about a third of new price, only a few scuffs so I am well pleased! It probably helped that our builder has used NorDan for several builds in the past - he recommends them highly.

Ok, they seem to be pretty flexible. I asume they make 3g to meet Passivhaus standard? And have alu-cladding for longevity.

They don't offer a Passivhaus design as such, but claim that their standard item can meet that standard with top-spec glass - but I doubt that. They do all-wood and alu-clad, but the latter is not v gd, and pricey, being in effect an all-Al window with internal wood stuck on, rather than an all-wood window with outer facing/glazing beads of Al. For alu-clad, go elsewhere. For all-wood, unbeatable.

Our Nordan windows are NTech Villa range, 2g, 6+16g+ES4, U value 1.2-1.4W/m2K (average 1.3). Alu-clad would have been another couple of grand on the build. They will also do other glass/gas combinations, and do 3g with U values down to 0.7, but I didn't find out the price. We live almost at sea level so don't usually suffer extremes of cold (only of wind and rain!), so outward opening was also important.

Russell were actually exhibiting a Nordan window at Ecobuild last year. I asked one of the blokes on the stand why and he told me that all the Norwegian windows look the same but it wasn't a Nordan window. When I pointed to a Nordan logo stamped onto the escutcheon (which is what prompted my original question) he said that they had a broken handle and had borrowed a spare handle from Nordan! Upon passing the Nordan stand later in the day I mentioned this to one of their chaps who then headed over to "sort a few things out" with the Russell guys. There appears to be some relationship there but its a strange one alright.
