I've inherited a 2 Leisure battery, 4 panel, controller and 240v inverter with my off grid cabin. Seems to me that half the stuff I'll be plugging in as 240v has an adapter dropping it to 12v so it seems more efficient to keep the inverter as a stand by and switch to wholly 12v appliances. What would be good sockets to install? I can put some USB sockets for Laptop, phone charging, hotspot, but many auto based appliances use those horrible cigar lighter sockets, any thoughts anyone? Then I got thinking about generators and swapping out the 240v alternator for a 12V.

Many of the 12v stuff off 240v transformer will be specific to that transformer and why give yourself a load of work converting over to all at 12 v. The only advantage I can see is with everything at 12 v you won't have a shock hazard. I have never really understood how you protect from shocks when you run such stuff as generators producing 240v without earths are actually safe. I guess it must be given the number of them in daily use.

I guess the advantage is efficiency. You'll barely draw any power until somethings plugged in. Car cigarette sockets are pretty good - you get USB adapters, even USB-C that are 40W or so to power a laptop. How much efficiency matters depends on how much you want to use stuff when it's a dismal day outside. Ahh - I see there might be a genny - then 240V I guess, "plenty" of power...

I'd take a look at a site such as https://www.12voltplanet.co.uk/ and see what they have that may help.

Caravan suppliers do 12V 2 pin sockets and plugs at up to 15 amps
