    Indeed. But the question is, did it get any subsidy for construction? As far as I can see the only subsidies available (grants/cheap loans?) are for community schemes. Any indication otherwise?

    Also, any indication of why the turbine isn't used? Maybe it failed planning noise conditions or something? Seems unlikely that anybody would put up a turbine then not take the money from running it on a whim.

    It is indeed very strange that Virgin would construct a turbine and not run the thing, but that is the case a Runcorn Station.

    Check out their planning permission. It's normal to add a condition requiring the turbine to be removed if it's not generating for say 12 months. Might be difficult to prove though as there is no guaranteed way for a member of the public to find out the status of a turbine. You will probably find that generation data is "company confidential" and planning conditions are almost never imposed requiring that info to be provided to anyone.

    Perhaps they are raking it in from car parking charges.
