It's a bog standard cased axial fan with what looks like a manual control on the top. Could be used for any one of a number of things.

not even close yet! It has handles on it so it can be picked up and moved. Need more clues?

It looks a little bit like the sort of fan used in blower-door tests, minus the tent and the flow control rings - though I seem to recall the one used on our tests was larger than that.

    Am I close?

Perfect! -- It would never get the pressure up to anywhere useful in the UK but it is a German one easily capable of getting their houses to pluss or minus 70Pa.

Has a computerised control panel built in too.

I suspect not many people in the UK have seen one of these in action. Over here, the fan is always used to depressurize since you can then go around with a smoke pencil and find the incoming air leakage paths - something that would be impossible if the house was pressurized. Depressurization (due to wind) is actually the main driving force for air to leak into a building anyway so the depressurization test is more realistic.

p.s. on our first (pre-renovation) test there was the feeling of a hurricane as the fan ramped up to full speed!

Paul, I saw the smoke test done in a video (posted on this forum somewhere) in Switzerland I think, where they pressurized the house, then blew it full of smoke and stood outside to see where the smoke left the building.

...so not for blowing skirts up then...

Have to agree Tony, the one I saw pictures of looked to be significantly bigger - going by the credit card held alongside(is it a credit card?)
Will have some more concrete evidence in a couple of months when we get our place tested

Ouch, that sounds like it would use much more smoke than the depressurization method - let alone the difficulty in seeing smoke coming out from inaccessible places! Still, with a seive-like house it must be fairly dramatic!

That kind of smoke test I believe is often used in larger buildings i.e Industrial units. A smoke pencil in a larger building is pretty much useless.
