I'm thinking of using blown cellulose insulation between the 140mm deep studs of my timber frame, but wanted to mitigate any cold bridging through the studs by using 50mm of Celotex or similar on the outside. Will this work?

The wall build up will be :-

    11mm plasterboard
    35mm service void
    Vapour control layer
    140mm cellulose insulated studs
    11mm OSB sheathing
    50mm Celotex or similar
    Breathable layer
    35mm cavity
Render board and render, or larch cladding.

    Looks OK

I've got 2 x 100mm (broken) stud frame, with blown poly beads then 50mm celotex, 18mm OSB, membrane, aluminium section for 35mm cavity and a combination of commercial rainscreen cladding and recovered scaffolding boards

Inside I've got 35mm celotex, 18mm OSB and 12mm plasterboard - although the 35mm celotex is cut and carved for service drops

There are small holes on the celotex layer where it was drilled through to fill the stud frame from inside before PB went on

(I used 18mm OSB as I managed to get a deal by taking a large number of packs direct)

Doesn't answer your cellulose question directly of course - jus that we have similar constructions

    Regards

    Barney

Not sure why you want a breathable membrane outside your non breathable celotex? It would be my only concern with your buildup, that in wall moisture can't get out to the outside when it's likely to have membranes either side of the wall that are non breathable

Aim to make only one side of your wall non breathable

How “non-breathable” (vapour resistant) is Celotex? With or without foil face?

Very non breathable in practice Ed

The "breathable membrane outside your non breathable celotex" allows any water that gets past the membrane to get out again. The membrane and rainscreen will not keep out more then 99.99% of the rain at best.
