I see that Ecobuild is on at ExCel, London from Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22 March. Anyone going and is there anything worth seeing?

Will Green Building be there? Will there be a brew on?

Last year it was alleged that it should have been called 'SolarWorld' so who knows what will be there this year.
Got a trip up country beginning of the month so I won't be there.

I noticed the ammount of Solar last year. I can only assume that it will be similar this year, to be honest.

Bit of a shame, as lots of other stuff gets overshaddowed (pun intended!) by it. I will be there, somewhere.

I suspect solar may not be quite so prominent this time around (although it is still financially viable on the new FIT rates), but possibly heat pumps will be, especially air source as they are 'easiest' to sell in a mass market.
The used car/double glazing style sales pitch is becoming embedded in these events now as many exhibitors are backed up by big money, so whichever technology they have latched on to to make a fast profit will be trying to dominate the floor space.
Its a quandary because without the technology becoming mainstream the cost will never reduce but as soon as it is mainstream, we have to put up with those 'salesmen' who really know very little but push quite a lot!
Maybe this just makes the event better for the more 'informed' of us?
I wont be at that event as I live/work in the north west and time/money wont stretch to a visit, but I sympathise with the event organisers trying to fill floor space in a recession getting all interested exhibitors in there.

I think it could be prudent just to hope that few generous forum members who do go, come back and share their experiences

I am going, so can report back. I will be 'on duty' though, so I doubt I will get to really give a good going through.
  1.
I'll be there - probably for 2 days as last year since you really need that long to get around and see it all. I'll post anything interesting up on my blog (see my profile) at the time.

Hopefully it's the last chance to look at new solutions before starting our build.
  2.
I'm in two minds about going:
    PLUS
    - new / latest information for my in progress ideas (www.silverspray.co.uk)
    - see stuff in action
    - have chats with people

    NEGATIVE
    - it's full of people selling their solution as the best, so normal bias creeps in
    - it's a long way from Cornwall and for a lot of my project I want, where possible to use local suppliers and materials

So any comments from somebody who went in the past, on how much they found it usefull (or not) would be great.

Maybe a minibus from Cornwall might be the answer.

I'm undecided but have registered anyway just in case. I need to look at heating/dhw appliances and green roof systems. I think it's good to go at least once if you've just embarked on a build project - 2 days should get you round!

I'd recommend going. This'll be my fourth year and the number of exhibitors and solutions grows each year. You have to keep your cynical hat on to help you see through the marketing bull but if you are looking for solutions to specific problems, want to see products in the real or talk to technical reps then it is well worth going along.

I can imagine that it's a bit of a trek from Cornwall. I still think you should see if you can make it - ideally staying over one night to leave you enough time for a good look round and travel out of peak times.

I would also highly recommend going, I have been a few previous years and it has been immensely useful and we have actually followed through on some of the products seen there a few years back, and now our roof is on so we are almost home with the new build.
Take in a couple of the seminars too. I found the oak frame company we ended up using this way. And they were not even at the show or directly involved with the seminar! they just kept being highly recommended by a few speakers. True to this, we are 100% happy with their work too.
I could'nt recommend Ecobuild as a show highly enough as a self builder. I would'nt even waste my time attending any others.

I live just the other side of the dock at present to will most likely be going. I usually pick up all sorts of flyers and marketing materials so I can file them and refer back to them later. I might take a rolly wheel suitcase this year to save my poor back!

There's an interesting new building going up a the end of the dock next door to Excel. http://www.thecrystal.org/_html/. A Technology showcase building that will be a permanent exhibition of green technologies. It won't be ready for this year show looking at current build progress, but you could wander over and have a look at what they are doing before all the structure is covered.

The whole area (olmpic park down to thames barrier and along to Dagenham) has been designated as one of Londons Green Enterprise Zones.

For those of you that find it a bit far London city airport is right next door (only joking). Your best best is train / tube and then catch the DLR from Bank and have a look at the architecture on the way out.

There's a lot of greenwash but some of the best stuff is the seminars.

I went last two years and it was very interesting. It is true that you can't even look round all of it on one day any more. I'm more or less done building for now so not sure if I'll go this time, but if you are planning stuff I'd recommend it very highly to see what things are actually like in the flesh, and find lots of stuff you simply didn't know about.

One tiresome thing is that I found various things that were very interesting but then turn out to be unobtaium in the UK in practice due to lack of importer/distributor.

And bear in mind that you are likely to come back and have to change all your plans.

I am planning on going again, will be my 3rd show, I also find it really useful. There is nowhere else that you will get so many sources of info under one roof. There is lots of greenwash, lots of saleman types who clearly don't know what they are talking about but also lots of honest knowledgable folks. The key is to spend enough time to take it all in and gain what you need and ignore the rubbish!

I would also recommend going over more than one day especially if you want to attend any seminars/debates and be wary of the latter part of last day, all the exhibitors are knackered and it starts winding up very quickly. Also, take a strong rucksack, you soon find yourself carrying half a tree of bumf around with you :-)

    Thankyou !
    - sounds like I should defenitly go
    - and for 2 days if I can.
