Nobody has mentioned the effect the MOT has had on getting cr@p off the roads. Cars are less polluting now and what we need are houses that are less polluting.

Dick strawbridge did it about a decade ago , do you remember the snappy up beat british title
    "It's not easy being green"
  3.
It's not just the trademens lack of attention to such details , the lack of desire, interest or knowledge from the client is a much part of the problem.
    No demand , no supply.

Not had a TV for 2 decades now, but was it simple DIY projects that take less than a day each or was it something that relied on having several acres of land and no neighbours?

(very) small holding in the west country I think. Plus simple diy energy saving stuff.
Didn't watch it , just got a few snipits. seemed good.
One day I'll make a program
" Passive house refurb for under £20K" half way there , should have done for 2020

Ditto weather at the other (north) end of the island. Big showers to the SW, though, otherwise I would have put some washing in.

waters currently lapping at their garden fence

Don't get flooding when the water is solid, mind you, one particular house is Henley is worth about the same as all of West Cornwall.
We do get a special snow down here, 'Cornish Snow'.

If I had know I would have been down there. It is close to where I first lived when I moved here. A very famous place and most if us are using the technology developed there right now.

You are right James and not all tradesmen are not up to speed. You have to start somewhere though and very few people build their own house compared to buying 'off the peg' so to say. And even if the client knows his stuff it is no good if the tradesman has not the skills required to carry out the work.

I think that part of the problem is that you cannot check how it is going half way though. Not as if you can airtest a wall in isolation.

I agree with the original thread in that there are a lot of shoddy tradesmen around. Unfortunately some consumers are driven by price alone and end up with this sort of standard of work. Personally I prefer to go for less expensive items and have them built/fitted by better quality (more expensive, sometimes) tradesmen.

Finding the better tradesmen is the tricky bit but word of mouth is generally best.

    DandJ,

price and quality in the building trade have very little to do with each other:sad:
