    With pump prices low, now is the time to whack a tax on particulates, NOX and anything else to discourage usage.

    that Glover chap loves ranting about extremist green zealot bullies forcing those in power and the media to bend to thier blinkered demands , silencing all decent . Seems to me his view are well aired in the media.
    Anyway on another completely different point :tongue:

    I don't sing the Christian Royalist anthem either. :devil:

    I meant about the Daily Fail's HQ. Google doesn't link it to Bermuda for me.

    Who said Christian? As far as I can remember the anthem mentions a deity without being specific about whos or which one. Christian is an assumption that in the now multicultural UK may no longer be valid :devil:

    Don't you believe it! REmember the beating the PoW got when he proposed, as Fid Def (as on our coins) to become the Defender of Faiths instead of the old Henry VIII title Defender of The Faith?

    Who is supreme governor of the church of England? Which god do you suppose is being referred to? Any attempt to suggest otherwise is, IMHO, an example of crass PC. What do you suppose some other god's purpose would be in maintaining the head of a competitive religion? It would be wrong in most religions to profess such beliefs.

    @fostertom

    I had Charlie's beasting down to lack of internal logic rather than a concern about broadening the role. Though it's quite premature given our culture, and other religions don't usually have a problem if not discriminated against, other than being used as political footballs by third parties.

    If he'd come up with something that respected each group's views, and overarched the lot in a more abstract purpose, rather than tried to create some sort of religious puree, he would have been treated gently.

    It is the same issue as the 'Humanists' going ballistic over their desire to include not-religions in all the charity benefit tests, because "Humanism is not a religion" is a key dogma. That you can't get a cigarette paper between Humanists and Quaker seems not to matter.

    "One of the most notorious beneficiaries of this arrangement has been Lord Rothermere, the owner of the Daily Mail. Rothermere inherited his non-dom status from his father, who lived for most of his life in France. The current Lord Rothermere, however, shows every evidence of living in Britain, even building what amounts to his own stately home."
    "The principal tax break for a “non-dom” is that overseas income is only taxable when “remitted” to Britain. For Jonathan Harmsworth (current Lord Rothermere) this has proved immensely valuable, as the hundreds of millions of pounds in DMGT dividends channelled over the years through Bermudan-registered Rothermere Continuation Ltd into trust of which he and his family are beneficiaries have magically become overseas income. Had this money been brought into the UK to pay for the new home in Wiltshire, it would have been taxable; the loan from the bank, on the other hand, would not."

    Thanks, James. So it's the owner rather than the newspaper that is based abroad. But the effect is the same. Crazy system.
