Following on from discovering the CWI has failed in our house and needs to be extracted I want to monitor the internal wall dampness before refilling the cavity with EPS. At its worst the internal wall is measuring 6-8% when it should be no more than 2%. I hired a damp meter to asses the walls originally but now want to buy (new or second hand) a reliable / quality meter that I can use prior to track the wall drying out. Can anyone advise what I should be looking for to get a reasonable quality without paying too much?

FYI the original thread on the CWI situation is - http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=13723

I would avoid the cheap meters that rely on two spikes which you press into the surface. They do not measure moisture, they measure resistance, which will be altered by the amount of salts in the substrates. They could be used for comparative levels, but will have their calibrations totally changed by the amount of condensation sitting on the surface /under the surface.
There is a type of meter that uses a UHF signal, which relies on the power absorbtion of the radio frequencies, these are likely to be more accurate, as they "measure" the bulk of the water in the wall.

I ended up purchasing a Protimeter Aquant 2 which is non-invasive, measures moistures at a depth of 19mm and isn't impacted by surface water. The wall in the WC is off the scale (not sure the scale is a unit measurement) but no doubt it is wet. I can now monitor it as it hopefully dries out now the cavity insulation has been removed.

    Paul,

Can I ask how much it was?

    Thanks,

    Nick
