    Hello all

I want to apply a form of external insulation to my 1900 Victorian house. I’ve come across two insulating, breathable renders in my research:

    https://www.coreconservation.co.uk/termorasante-aerogel-thermal-lime-plaster/

    https://proofshield.co.uk/product/prooftherm-insulating-render-plaster/

I guess my question here is - are these really worth it? Is it better to just pay more for insulation boards and do it that way?

    Thanks

What is your target u-value? Do you intend to meet building regulations or exceed them?

I’ve used the proof shield plaster for internal window reveal details. After moving windows out due to Ewi, there was a space to fill, why not fill with something a bit insulating? It was easy enough to use. But it’s not got a stellar lamda value, so you’d need a lot of it to Ewi a house with! You’d have to apply it almost twice as thick as the standard platinum eps.

Thanks both. Only at the start of my journey so haven’t thought much about target U values and so on.

That was my concern @RobL, that I would need quite a lot of the stuff to be comparable to EPS or the like in terms of its insulating properties. The aerogel based plaster does sound interesting though. Probably quite expensive. They claim to have a lambda value of ƛ0.016. Seems pretty good.

One of my concerns with putting EPS or any other “hard” material that needs to be fixed to my walls is 1) the cost, labour mostly, which I expect to be hideous; and 2) I have many a pipe coming out if the house that’d need to be extended as well as a very awkward cast iron soil pipe which would make insulating behind difficult. So was hoping there was an alternative.

The biggest cost with EWI is the finish - the patent render is cheapest, about half the total cost; anything else, like stick-on brick slips or timber cladding, will cost even more. As the finish cost dominates, and the insulation fixing is another fixed cost, the economics say that you might as well put on thickest poss insulation, as the insulation material cost is a small part of the total, however thick it is.

I think either of those plasters will be vastly more expensive than doing it the normal way. It sounds as you say that you are at the start of your journey, and still have some way to go in terms of investigating, learning and thinking about the various issues that might arise, so it will be some time before you're ready to choose a particular plan and start spending any money on it.

FWIW, I've written to the firm about the aerogel plaster; I'll post back here with whatever I learn about price etc.
