    I've just put a new chassis on a 35 year old car. There is sometimes sense in keeping old things going saving the energy needed to build new things even if the new thing is 20% more efficient.

    I don't fully understand how more and more consumerism will solve energy supply problems. I can see it being good for economics. Maybe that's why they do it that way.

    35yo - makes it a '87 - Mini? Or if really a separate chassis, Land Rover? But that shouldn't have rusted out so soon.

    At that time, FTCR members were despairing about their beloved rusty Fiat 124 Coupes - we never discovered till much too late that new Lada floor pans etc were available from Russia, not to mention Turkey, Egypt, India and other 124-derivative places (more 124s built than any other car ever, incl Beetles and Model Ts).

    I worked architecturally for Charlie Ware in Bath, whose final visionary enterprise (among many) was the Morris Minor Centre, home of 'the durable car' - every conceivable body/repair panel handmade in Sri Lanka where they were the national car ("was"? I see they, incl Charlie apparently, are still going strong!).

    Mine is a late Renault 4 van. It's very useful for picking up materials for my house project which stalled after the rear suspension fell off. It doesn't get a lot of use but allows me to run something other than an SUV as a daily.

    I like Charles Ware's ethos. His idea of preserving houses and cars rather than replacing them has become unpopular. It doesn't make people enough money.

    R4 - separate chassis? Ideal. I miss my 2cv.
