the thermal images from normal cameras i phones etc are not real thermal images but adjusted optical images including some near ir, useless for what we are talking about.

Ed's link is for a separate camera that is bluetoothed to a phone/computer. I would get on at the price suggested if the field of view is decent enough.

An MOT for a car covers basic safety aspects like brakes and lights. Although it does cover pollution it only measures the efficiency (% C0 emissions) of the engine (e.g. measuring efficiency of the boiler).

In every other aspect, the performance of the car is not checked. Just because a car passes an MOT DOES NOT mean that it is roadworthy!

I thought it was. Don't they check chassis for rust and structural integrity? I am sure that is on the list along with the odd extra thing or two.

Not if the car is built before 1960, they are except form the MOT now, though they still have to comply with all the other safety aspects. So you can't have bald tyres, a broken exhaust, smoke pouring out, no wipers, cracked windscreen etc.

how many pre 1960 cars do you see on the road? % wise very, very few.

Was just highlighting the short comings of the car analogy really.
Though it could be possible to that old houses get exception because they are hard to treat, and we have a lot of them.

I saw an Allegro the other day, not quite pre 1960, but they drove like it

Yes they do check the chassis for rust, but they are not allowed to remove or move anything, so if you fit your car with (or it comes with) sill covers, if the MOT man can't see the HUGE gaping holes in the chassis, then he can't fail it! Also they don't check it for structural integrity. It is all just a visual check with a bit of poking here and there with a screwdriver. Your car could pass an MOT and then 5 minutes later the wheels could fall off! Most people put far too much faith in an MOT.

Again, I am not against the idea, just be careful what you wish for.
