An MOT for a car covers basic safety aspects like brakes and lights. Although it does cover pollution it only measures the efficiency (% C0 emissions) of the engine (e.g. measuring efficiency of the boiler).
In every other aspect, the performance of the car is not checked. Just because a car passes an MOT DOES NOT mean that it is roadworthy!
Posted By: SteamyTeaNot if the car is built before 1960, they are except form the MOT now, though they still have to comply with all the other safety aspects. So you can't have bald tyres, a broken exhaust, smoke pouring out, no wipers, cracked windscreen etc.
