The reason for the leading zeros ("0") in front of numbers is that computers sort on a digit by digit basis. So a file starting with a "0" will always preceed a file starting with a "1" in its file name in a listing of a directory( my documents?). So without using the leading zero the file names will take the following order in a list:- 1test.doc,11test.doc,12test.doc,2test.doc,3test.doc. If the leading zero is used, the list becomes:- 01test.doc,02test.doc,03test.doc. . . . . . . 12test.doc. For the system to work correctly, you have to use leading zeros for all the values, so for a directory that might have 1000 pictures in it the first one is 0001.pic,0002.pic . . . etc. XXX.pic only goes up to 999.pic so unless you call the first picture 000.pic, you will only get 999 not 1000 pictures in it.

If this thread is an acceptable place for non-building related ranting about numbers and language, how about this, from a job description I was looking at:
"We have therefore identified a need for longer term support to develop capacity building support which will in turn support the development of the networks and to promote workforce development in [name of council removed]’s VCS. The purpose of this project therefore recognises that the development of such networks needs to be run alongside more detailed capacity building support for individual members and potential members to support their participation in this network and others."

Aargh! Gibberish! No wonder councils find it hard to actually get anything done, if even their basic job descriptions are absolutely unintelligible.
