    I am a gas safe registered installer based in central london. 2 years ago I removed a 10 yr old 55kw condensing boiler on on off controls. I replaced it with a 35kw condensing boiler but with compensation controls.

    The annual kwh usage went down from 62000 to 49000. Degree data from the London city weather station indicates the 2nd year was actually colder.

    The client comments that the house was warmer than ever before.

    Compensation controls are something we have to get used to, it seems!

    It's a useful optimisation, but 35kW is still a lot of power at a domestic scale. The answer is in truly reducing the demand.

    It is about 20% better now, could that just be the boiler being better at condensing because it is better sized for the thermal load?

    Not at all..it's the way the software manages the heating load...Rads never much hotter than 50c...
