Heating and cooling: Pump overrun

    Friend has a Worcester boiler and solar cylinder

    Pump has run 24/7 or would if they didn’t switch it off at night, for the last few weeks

    Boiler controls pump but pump seems to be ‘smart’ having led, temp and flashing led’s on it

    I think the pump is picking up the solar thermal heat and thinking the boiler needs to cool so it runs

    Plan to talk to WB technical tomorrow

    Opinions?

    We have a WB Greenstar Ri Regular Boiler, and a solar cylinder (not WB, not linked to it, separate coils). We also have a "smart" pump, that knows water pressure maybe other stuff, I'm not really sure how it helps anything tbh as we have a 1 pipe rad system from 1963 so I can't see how pressure changes with demand. Our boiler powers the external pump - Live and Neutral for the pump connect from the boiler to it. The pump has no control connections, they're not that smart. I expect the boiler just switches the Live with a relay internally.
    If it's like ours, then it can only be something bust in the boiler, likely a relay ?

    What pump is it? Built-in to boiler or separate (brand and model identification?)

    Or maybe a temperature probe or thermostat?

    What does the pump do? Possibly it is a central heating circulation pump or perhaps a pump running the solar panels to cylinder circuit.
    Identifying what the pump does will narrow down the fault area to inspect.

    Make sure a thermostat hasn't been inadvertently turned up to max.

    I don't see how the boiler would cool the solar thermal.

    I had a situation where the hot water in the TS was circulating under gravity flow into the boiler so making the boiler act as a radiator. The solution was to put an anti flow valve in the return loop that only activated when pump is running. Your situation may not be same. May be worth checking if gravity flow is playing a part by turning power off to the pump and see if flow to the boiler from the tank occurs, which may give you a handle on the issue.

    WB say under guarantee and could be pcb in pump but they will look

    Needs 80C for pump to overrun by design

    That is interesting. I always thought the overrun was a timed/temperature operation in that the reason for the overrun was to clear the boiler of hot water as it was more use elsewhere than sat in the boiler. Things change though and its often difficult to keep up.
