General: open vented wood burner

    Hi

    I am hoping to fit a wood burning stove with a charging unit (laddomat 21) sending the heat to a 1500 litre accumulator, I am also going to be sending solar to this tank form an evacuated tube panel. My plumber is worried about "pump-over" in the vent pipe that rises off the hot (flow) side. Has anyone got a working installation like this ?

    "pump over" can be a problem in lots of installations, especially bumgalows. I tried lookingwith Google for your unit, but I could not find any relevant data quickly. Hopefully there will be details supplied with your unit on the minimum head to avoid PO. Get your plumber to install it. If PO occurs, turn the laddo pump speed down or increase the height of the vent pipe, i.e. take it right up into the roof ridge before dropping it down to the header tank. Or insert a gate valve upstream of the vent take off but before the laddo unit. Or just use a pop-off valve (saftey valve) on the end of the pipe in the tank, so if the system gets pessurised the valve opens and dumps the water in the header tank. This is only to be used if there is a seperate fill connection to the boiler i.e. the boiler dooes not fill via the vent pipe.

    It would be unwise to form any restriction to the vent pipe especially so on a wood burner it just takes someone to leave the stove door open and you can have instant boiling, believe me the wife's a dab hand at it. raising its height would be ok.

    Put the vent up stream of the pump as long as you have a pressure controlled bypass in the system. The solar should be on a separate circuit and coil in the tank so will have no effect on PO
