(A decent laptop will be at nothing like 100W unless it's a very powerful one and you're running it flat out. More typically, waiting for you next keystroke, would be 10W--20W, maybe 250Wh/d.)

Trouble is, Pete, it's not junk mail! They've got you there.

(Ah, sorry Pete. Serves me right for assuming on brief look. It DOES include all BT/Yellow Pages and others. Interesting to see how well it works.)

And just got this as a response...

"You have received this e-mail because you tried to contact the Mailing Preference Service via www.junkbuster.org.uk.

Unfortunately, the Mailing Preference Service has decided to no longer send opt-out forms to people requesting such a form via e-mail. For this reason Junk Buster has not sent an e-mail to the Mailing Preference Service. There would be little point in doing so - your email would simply be ignored.

In order to register with the Mailing Preference Service you can use another opt-out website. In 2010, Consumer Focus launched the website http://stayprivate.org. Via this website you can register with both the Mailing Preference Service and Telephone Preference Service.

Alternatively, you can register with the Mailing Preference Service via its website at www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/mps_choosetype.html.

Finally, we would like to take the opportunity to explain why the Mailing Preference Service is trying to put a spanner in the Junk Buster works. The Mailing Preference Service's decision to no longer accept e-mails was taken shortly after several thousands of people contacted the opt-out scheme via Junk Buster in March 2010. The official reason for the decision to no longer accept e-mails is that this will save paper, which I reckon is a rather cynical excuse for a service run by the Direct Marketing Association. The Mailing Preference Service would of course save a lot more paper if it would make it easier for people to opt out of receiving unwanted unsolicited mail.

I do hope you will still register with the Mailing Preference Service. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries about this e-mail.

    Best regards,

    Robert Rijkhoff"

(And sorry John, we hijacked your thread mate.)

And don't get me started on Yellow Pages, scourge of the local authority paper recycling world...

I thought they could be recycled now that they don't use yellow paper - they print the yellow now.

PS. anyone know why quote doesn't work, or is it because I'm trying to quote over a page?

Mine seems to, but then it is often running flat out. The energy meter is next to it and it is when I is recalculating I look at the meter, Fridge is 150W. I play a game of 'guess what is on' as I type in lonely solitude.

They print the yellow now? Yikes.

Quoting seems to work best for me by highlighting what you want to quote, then clicking quote -- though a lot of the Vanilla fancy pants features are dependent on having a modern browser.

And making sure it is added as an HTML Comment
    Text does the hyperlinks
One or the other, not both

Just annoy all the purists and copy (highlight+Ctrl+P) the section of text and paste (Ctrl+V) it into the comments box between standard "quote" marks.

All that formatting stuff that appears in the "proper" method does my head in.

(highlight+Ctrl+C), sir. I can hear the purists tutting, y'know.

It's OK, it works - as long as you're quoting the last page - weird.

Pity you can't do links and quotes in the same post...

Back to Yellow pages - apparently they have printed the yellow for the last 10 years: http://www.warwickdc.gov.uk/WDC/Recycling-waste-and-environment/Rubbish_x2c_+waste+and+recycling/Recycling/Yellow+Pages+Recycling.htm - not my council - just googled it.

But why don't they please bypass the whole recycling bit and just not print the bloody things in the first place!

Yesterday I posted a folded A4 page through a dozen neighbours' letterboxes. Most of these provided an assault course of multiple brushes and springloaded flaps. Generally I could only post the letter by poking my fingers all the way in, always wondering whether they would come out uninjured. Aaargh! It must be hell for the posties, couriers and leafleters.

I think the British way is daft. Anything that keeps the draught out, will seriously impede the insertion of mail. We should all fit locked boxes outside the house, preferably big enough to receive the parcels ordered from online retailers which are, increasingly, the only worthwhile thing that arrives through the letterbox. Anyone lucky enough to have a porch can still have a letter slot - but go easy on the draughtproofing. Make the inner door your draught barrier.
