    How should a self-builder of about buying a gas boiler when they've already chosen what boiler they want?

    We also intend do as much of the fitting as possible ourselves.

    Shall we just buy it online and then find a plumber/gas fitter to hook it up and commission it? Or should we find approved suppliers/engineers for the particular boiler we want and buy it off them?

    What you are wanting to do is very much frowned upon within the gas industry; if you buy and install yourself and leave the final gas connection & commissioning to a registered Gas Safe engineer then, you will likely struggle to find someone who is prepared to do this. Or, if they do, they will charge you a fortune.

    I see. So how much could we do without causing this problem? Put it up on the wall and bring the plumbing to within range?

    Find an installer that likes that particular make. Get them to quote for boiler installation. Remember they should zero rate the boiler an installation for VAT.

    Plenty of gas reg guys will fit customer brought boilers and fill in benchmark form etc. A few will sign off fitted kit. Depends on who you know. If its combi do all pipe work except gas up about 1m from boiler . You could do gas run but dont connect either end and make sure the run is visable for inspection and conforms. Ok this with the guy you intend to use. For combi fit only in london you'll pay around £500.
    One slight disadvantage of this method is you'll probably only get basic warranty. 2-5years .

    Can't you fit the lot yourself and then get BG to do a gas safety check. Landlords need to get one done every year and I don't think they cost too much.

    You can DIY but you would have to notify the Building Control Department (fee unless you can add it to an existing application). I believe it would then be down to the BCO to certify the installation. In practice they are likely to ask you to pay for someone qualified to check the installation. I suppose they might accept a gas safety check.

    We bought. We'll fit all bar the gas. £250 runs a short gas line and commissions it around Cambridge way. I wouldn't consider that a fortune for a good half day's work.

    Gas fitters as an industry might not like it - they'd rather make £1000 for a good day's work by supplying parts at marked up prices and charging gas hourly rates for water work - but plenty will take the job/you will not struggle to find one.

    Warranty on the boiler you're considering is 5 years regardless of who installs and maintains it. Do check the small print on other warranties. Many of the longer ones are worthless unless serviced annually by approved fitters at eye watering rates: cheaper to pay for the repairs as and when required. I'd service every 3 years if I weren't a landlord and not in a hard water area; annual on a domestic boiler is overkill IMO.

    No they won't or shouldn't. A gas safety check is a visual inspection for signs of spillage & gas appliance/pipework non-conformance together with a whole system gas tightness test to verify no gas leaks. This will not cover gas supply pipe work sizing to an appliance/s or permissible gas pressure drop at the appliance.

    So what kind of inspection do Building Control expect you to obtain?

    An appliance/system "commission"; - this word is loaded with legal implications & responsibility for the person signing the installation off. I worked for a major UK boiler manufacturer for 20 years as a field service engineer and because of the implications associated with the word commission ie sanctioning the whole system to be compliant the company decided to label their appliance "commissioning" visit (as we know it) as a performance and operational check - gets around the word "commission" which encompasses the whole gas installation!
