Just received the dreaded letter from npower notifying me of a 15.5% price rise. A quick check shows i could save by switching. All good so far. Problem is, I had solar pv installed in July and registered with npower for the FiTs. In their conditions it says must be a npower customer to have them as FiT supplier. A search online would seem to provide contradictory information. Various sites say that FiT provider and electricity supplier can be different, yet other sites state that the 'big 6' can tie you in so that you have to take your electricity supply from them if they provide the FiT. FiTs can be switched as I understand it, Does the tariff remain the same as I assume the system will be registered centrally with the regulator, or is there a risk you would have to sign up to lower FiT rates? Anyone have direct experience and can advise?

You can switch FiT supplier and you will always retain the same rate. The Big6 are only required to offer a FiT contract to someone who is either their customer or not a customer of another Big6 company.

You can also be pretty certain that other suppliers will be aligning their prices with any general increase although you may get lucky and find a supplier offering a guaranteed term.

Shop around the little guys. One of the green suppliers may suit, as they don't necessarily put their electricity prices up due to some of the things the big six do (such as rises in gas prices). I can recommend Good Energy, but how good a deal they are depends where you are.

Moneysavingexpert.com is always a good place for comparison shopping, not a comparison site in itself but tells you the best way to go about it. I noticed this morning it said "still not too late to avoid the hikes".

if you go with one of the smaller FiT suppliers which doesn't tie you in (i.e. Good energy) you can change electricity supplier at will (well just like a normal customer).

i.e. we have good energy for FiT and ebico (SSE) for elecricity and gas.

We had import and FIT with Southern. Decided to move to a Greener Energy supplier and went to Good Energy. They were not prepared to administer a 4kWp array with an export meter - they wanted to do deemed export which since we export 60% wasn't acceptable. But they took ages to decide this, by which time the import was with them, and so the FIT stayed with Southern. Now in the throes of moving both to Green Energy, who could cope with the export meter. I made sure Green Energy confirmed everything in writing before starting the process!
