    Hi all

    I've had 3 quotes all proposing different routes to connect up our (very) large wood boiler stove to our existing heating system which has only a small 6kw elec boiler running it currently (we have storage heaters as well). We have decided we definitely want a thermal store and going for one which is 500l and tall so hopefully good stratification.

    So questions:

    Do H2 / laddomat do the same job? My understanding is the laddomat circulates the water from the wood boiler to get it to burn efficiently and when at right temperature 'releases' the water to the thermal store. I'm unclear if the H2 panels does this as well or is it even necessary if we have a thermal store to 'combine' all the heating sources (there may or may not be solar thermal if we can get it fixed and possibly an immersun for an immersion).

    Are there cheaper / better alternatives?

    H2 will do a similar job to an accumulator or buffer store - in the sense of managing and directing heat flows - but with reliance upon motorised diverter valves and of course no buffer storage. The buffer accumalator 'allows' for this to happen, much like a 'neutraliser' or 'low loss header' - simply because it presents a low pressure dead zone to eliminate unwanted cross circulations.
    A thermal store is more accurately defined as an accumalator or buffer store - but with an added mains pressure cold-hot water heat exchanger

    You can get cheap and cheerfull from people like gledhill, imi range, advance etc - but they are pretty basic and low spec. mid range from Newark or HTC (but they keep going bust to fiddle vat then re emerging) - Clever kit would come from people like DPS now thermal integration and TMSthermalstore

    Whichever way you go a laddomat or return riser is a sensible investment especially with a large stove that will take time to reach temp. Otherwise you may be moving large volumes of cool water from the TS to the boiler stove slowing its heat up time down further, in addition the low temp return could cause condensation and rotting of the stove and thermal stress due to the difference between flow and return.
