I need to "spruce up" a couple of areas of brick garden wall and a freestanding brick pillar and thought I'd have ago myself. I have the tools and the various beads for creating a neat edge. Rather than use a sand and cement scratch coat, followed by a top coat, I thought I'd use a single coat, even monocouche product. It'll vary between 10 and 18mm thick.
Does anyone have experience of any particularly good, or indifferent products to avoid?

Avoid all of them! Likely it will fall off, render is not great on cold structures.
  1.
I've used the thin film acrylic render as used on EWI on various items e.g.cement rendered pillars, brick work and OSB all with great success. (It has out lasted quality paint).
I have put it on with both a float and a brush. However I've never put it on thickly, (apart from the expense it would sag off) but if you don't want a flat smooth finish i.e. you can follow the lumps and bumps of the substrate then choose your colour and off you go.

For the odd bag they seem to retail between £10- £15, obviously less in bulk. Contrary to tony's views, they have good reviews and can even be pump applied although not in my case, so thickness isn't a problem.
Initially I didn't look at the monocouche through coloured versions, only the simple grey finish for painting but I may widen my search.

Some of the self-coloured monocouche stain badly after a time. Some due to algae growth and others due to high iron content that is in the sand. The latter particularly if close to the coast. I would for a garden wall go for a simple render and paint. Why not put a trellis against it grow some plants up it? Much greener.

I used a K-rend through coloured one coat render that had a silicon in it on a facade 19 years ago, the renderer wasn’t the best skilled , but today it looks little different to when it was first done. Building is about 500m from the coast , but does not face the sea directly, seagull sh1te that gets streaked down it usually washes off in the first few decent rain showers each year.
The nearest equivalent from the descriptions in the current product range seems to be Silicon K1. At the time i had to buy a full pallet as the minimum order quantity , so it got used on a couple of other jobs over the next few years, even well out of date it worked fine.
