Energy Assessment: Seasonal Performance Factor for RHI - ASHP

    Hi, my new home (self build completed last summer) has an ASHP which qualifies me for RHI (legacy systems). I understand that the default SPF value will be 2.5, so I'm wondering if it's worth having an SPF report done to determine whether the actual value is higher & will therefore generate a larger RHI payment.

    Not coincidentally I've just received a mailshot from Home Survey Reports Ltd ('recommended partner' of my installer Ice Energy) offering to carry out the report for £200+VAT. It provides a sliding scale of increased RHI payments, starting at £302 over 7 years for an SPF of 2.7. This is based on a house using 20,000 kwh p.a.; the EPC for my house estimates demand at 26,000 kwh p.a.

    Anyone in a position to advise/guesstimate whether my installation (Ecodan 14kw heat pump running wet UFH downstairs, domestic hot water, rads - rarely required - in bedrooms) is likely to have a SPF higher than 2.5?

    And I wonder what this company actually does to produce its report - if it's anything like a SAP I expect not a lot!

    Well if they are a recommended partner then they should have done lots of 14kW Ecodans already. I'd be asking them for a list of results for the last 10 they have tested.

    I did a Google search using the term 'spf report ecodan' and the results suggest an SPF of 2.9. Might be worth you doing the bit more research?

    Bizarrely and wrongly, for the purpose of the RHI the actual SPF of the heat pump is irrelevant, it is the sizing and therefore flow temp required within the heat emitters that is what determines the tariff adjustment.

    To provide the information to support an application to OFGEM, a full elemental fabric heat loss assessment is required, believe me £200 is a fair refection of the work involved, bear in mind though that the tariff relates to the flow temp required in the worst performing room, so you might not know if you are due an increase until after the assessment.
