People have been drinking water for quite a lot longer than 100 years :) Apparently sand filters have been around for a couple of thousand years, at least. Modern practice predates the Victorians by a bit.

Fine ever since, if lots of leaves get in it can discolour but I strain them out at the bottom of the down pipes .]]>
