The waste industry has responded angrily to the government's 11th hour decision to scrap up to £200m of financial support for three major waste-to-energy projects designed to help the UK meet its renewable energy and landfill targets.

Defra confirmed late last week that it would not provide anticipated Waste Infrastructure Credits for Private Finance Initiative (PFI) waste projects that have not yet reached financial close.

The credits, which help local authorities pay for long-running PFI contracts, had been earmarked for three waste-to-energy projects being planned by a number of northern local authorities: Bradford and Calderdale, Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority and Halton, and North Yorkshire and City of York.

The Merseyside plant is nearing completion and I hear it will be turned on this year.

Did you know that the EA allows the ash that comes out of incinerators to be used as hardcore on agricultural farm tracks.

Only if it complies with other rules about toxicity surely. And a farmers common sense, not as if he wants to kill his livestock/sell poisoned produce.
