When I buy luminaires with GU10 sockets, I find that they often come with halogen lamps included. This is a big waste, since I don't want the halogen lamps and am going to go out and buy some LED or fluorescent replacements. So it seems to me that manufacturers are committing a moral wrong as well as a financial one when they incude lamps with their products.

Do you agree, or is there some sensible use for the lamps?

Come to that, there's the same problem with fluorescent tube fittings. They almost inevitably come with some tubes of the wrong colour (we only like daylight). And increasingly there's a problem even buying anything other than 'warm white' lamps.

Are there any solutions, or do I just keep junking lots of perfectly good lamps?

And these "included bulbs" frequently fail within a very short period.

Yes, a big waste. I try really hard to buy fittings without lamps, and have wondered about giving the halogens back to the shop.

But DJH I like warm white and seem to end up with lots of unwanted blue lights, should we swap?

With very inefficient lamps such as halogen, wouldn't it better to get rid of them (not sure if they are recyclable) than to encourage someone else to use these energy guzzlers? I'd give the fluorescent tubes away on free cycle etc as they're pretty efficient and white or warm white are much more popular colours than daylight. I'd have had some for lighting the loft if they were the 36 W T8 tubes!

I bought one the other day which said the 'recommended' bulb was a LED type. They still included a halogen bulb in the pack. I mean WHY? They could have made their product cheaper by not including a bulb at all.

I have also seen examples where the packaging suggests the luminaire won't take LED bulbs when in fact they work fine. The labelling rules make vendors over-cautious about this. Correction: I suspect the vendors don't even understand the labelling rules (Screwfix, pay attention!)

Oh and can people please stop using 'energy-saving' as a euphemism for 'not criminally inefficient'

    +1 to that.

Also wish that fittings with lamps would quote lumens as well as watts. I thought it was an EU requirement? That applies to all types of bulb. Being old I have a reasonable mental image of what a 100W or 40W etc. incandescent bulb looks like, I have now learned the lumens involved. But I have bought fittings inadequate for my needs because the most powerful lamp that can fit it is just too dim. I now do more research online, but wish it was on the label in the shop.
