I've been quoted between £1925 and £2232 for 2no Palladio composite doors for supply and fit, but the second company can also supply the Passivdor range. They claim 2no of these should cost over £2700 including fitting, but will give me £500 off making them the same price as their Palladio quote.

There is so little info about Passivdor online and it is pretty much unheard of with any other local supplier I tried so getting prices for comparison is proving a challenge. Has anyone else been successful in getting a price and if so, what was it?]]>

What I was wondering was whether an existing U=3ish 2G window could be improved by adding external insulation on the frames and maybe adding a third glass/polycarbonate pane internally with clips.

Not sure if this would require consent for external changes... my building is 1950s and isn't listed or in a conservation area, so shouldn't be too much trouble.]]>

I don't have any particular need for extra DPC. I just stumbled across this in a recent spam email and I though, "what on earth...?"

Personally I am sceptical (of course) but I thought a few folks here might like to share the entertainment value.
Some quotes:-

Using osmosis a small current positively charges free moisture molecules, which are repelled from the positive anode and attracted to a negative cathode that is buried in the ground, (just as the "poles" of magnets repel or attract each other).

and

Ideal for walls up to 600mm thick and for rubble-filled walls, the Lectros Electro Osmotic damp-proofing system is the only dpc treatment that can be installed above timber flooring joists to drive excess moisture down to a level beneath them, fulfilling a vital requirement of a damp-proof course.]]>

"An external wall insulation (EWI) system is fixed to the outside of a building to minimise heat loss through the building structure, and thereby reduce energy use. It also provides a weather-proof facade, controls condensation, eliminates cold bridging and reduces sound transmission.

The system is formed of several layers of core components. From inside to outside, these are: beads and closures, adhesive, insulation, reinforced basecoat, primer and topcoat. Depending on the required performance and appearance, different types of insulation and render-based finish can be used. EWI can be applied to blockwork, brickwork and concrete-based substrates, as well as various frame constructions using an external cement-based particle board."

I think I'm looking for the following features

- airtight
- able to have insulation over the top
- fire rated
- reasonable cost

I can buy many hoods for insulation - but they tend to be more expensive than most lights. I'm also a little unclear what covering an LED with insulation will do to it's lifetime - they mostly seemed to be design to heat-sink above, rather than back into the room.
I don't actually need them to be bright - the hall is currently lit by only 2 of the 6 downlightsers with 35W bulbs - so I think almost anything will be OK if I have all 6 working.
I'm not totally sold on integrated LED fixtures. If one fails then I imagine the chances of being able to replace it is pretty low.

The best option I've seen so far seems to be these

Traditional kiln-fired clay bricks for construction are in short supply, with delivery waiting times counted in months in some parts of the country. Certain large housebuilders have found the backlog so severe they have resorted to importing supplies from Europe, as have some manufacturers. The Construction Products Association reported earlier this year that manufacturers have raised production and used imports as a temporary buffer as housing starts pick up pace.

I can't find any UK suppliers who even use the terminology, unless it's different here and I'm missing something.

My application is in this case only a shed which I plan to clad in square sawn timber. Z-flashing strips (if I could find them supplied anywhere, without getting them specially folded) may work out more economical than doing my own with lead, or with a roll-type lead alternative - which isn't much cheaper.

We bought it on the basis that it's "universal" and can be used with "all types of roof coverings up to 90mm profile depth" (according to various websites where it's sold). Having unboxed it we're not so sure.

1. When you look at diagrams in the enclosed instructions it implies that this flashing only works with high profile roof tiles (hence the "H" in the name). The diagrams (and Fakro's website) suggest this 'soaker' type flashing (ELN/ELV) instead:
http://www.fakro.co.uk/htmlen/127.php

2. We couldn't quite work out how you'd fit half plain tiles over the flashing without nailing through the flashing? Do you simply make sure you only nail outside the ridge of the flashing?]]>

If you're a self-builder who tries to get these things done on weeknights and weekends it's a nightmare (we just ripped our roof off today to realise there's a 3 week lead-in time to get the correct flashing kit.

So...

There are four pieces to a Fakro:
1. Flashing kit (e.g. EZV)
2. Underfelt collar (XDS)
2. Window (e.g. FTT U5)
3. Airtightness collar for inside (XDP)

Make sure you get the XDS and XDP, unless you're sure you really don't need them.

The type of window you get will depend on the pitch of your roof and the flashing kit will depend on the roofing material (and window).

Don't be fooled by websites telling you the EHV Thermo is a "universal" flashing and "can be used with all types of roof coverings". The EHV is for *high profiled* roofing. It is not universal and not designed to work with plain clay or slate tiles for example. (The second letter in their flashing codes refers to the roofing material and the third letter refers to the level the window is installed into the roof.)
http://www.roofingsuperstore.co.uk/product/ehvat05-fakro-single-universal-flashing-with-additional-thermal-insulation-78cm-x-98cm.html
http://www.phstore.co.uk/ehv-at-thermo-flashing.html

If you want a Thermo flashing choose the flashing type you need based on your window and your roof material and then simply append "Thermo". (apart from the EPJ, there's no thermo version of that.)]]>
