For the last decade innovators in the construction sector have been developing solutions to address areas of thermal bridging which occur when there is a gap between materials and the structural surfaces. By improving the airtightness of the building fabric and the thermal performance of the structure - cold bridging can be eliminated and thermal performance enhanced - reducing heat loss, carbon emissions and ultimately, offering vast savings on energy consumption.

Numerous technologies looking to maximise offsite manufacturing, have embraced the Fabric First building principles, are now gaining traction with the end users - home owners and developers - particularly in the self-build, education, health care and social housing sectors, where sustainability and ‘whole life costs' of the building are crucial to the specifying decision process.

Anyway, I have volunteered and the first training is tomorrow night in the use of the camera. The idea is to be able to offer low-cost (for a donation to cover the cost of the camera) surveys of heat loss.

Low energy, low carbon buildings are difficult to achieve economically without the 'fabric first' approach of Passivhaus. It enables homes to be built now to achieve the Zero Carbon requirement to be implemented in 2016 - and without the complication of off-site 'allowable' solutions to meet the target.

This seminar will help to de-mystify the Passivhaus concept, its particular design standards and how they are satisfied. It will help you to understand the definition of 'Zero Carbon Homes' and how the Passivhaus 'fabric first' solution can already deliver homes to meet the anticipated standard. The integrated design solution results in a comfortable, healthy environment as well as significantly lowering running costs for both homes and non-domestic buildings.

The house is a typical 1980s cavity wall construction with minimal insulation standards, it has been extensively renovated to a high level of energy efficiency. Warmcel insulation has been installed in the walls and roof and the ground floor has also been re-built with close-centred underfloor heating over perlite insulation. The windows and doors are Ecoplus 3 (Uw ≈ 0.86 W/m2K) from the Green Building Store. The external wall insulation is clad in local western red cedar replacing the original cement render finish. The house is heated with a small ground source heat pump and also has a PV installation.

The architect is Pat Borer, the builder is Ian Sneade, and they will be on hand to show you around the property and talk about what was done to the house, along with other companies involved with the project. The clients - Robin and Jane Emmerson will also be there to talk about their wishes for the house, the end result and what it was like to carry out this sort of work.

Please note this is a private house so we would ask that all visitors respect their privacy and the property.

It introduces the delegates to the Passivhaus principles walking them through best practice construction techniques whilst highlighting the outline specification and certification criteria. This project was undertaken by the Mackintosh Environmental Architecture Research Unit (MEARU) in collaboration with the partner SME John Gilbert Architects Ltd (JGA).

The aim of the feasibility study was to explore the potential for the development of a cost effective Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) methodology (with a particular sustainability focus) that can be used to gather both quantitative and qualitative information regarding energy and environmental performance of housing. This would provide useful data for the designers, clients and users, leading to improved performance of the existing houses and future designs.

JGA assisted in the selection of sample house types from 4 Housing Associations and liaised with participating housing providers. MEARU undertook data acquisition via resident survey questionnaires and durational monitoring of 8 selected house types. JGA and MEARU have reviewed the process to identify key areas for inclusion and most cost effective outcomes for a POE methodology which could be widely used. MEARU has also developed a sample on-line POE tool and template documentation which could be applied to future POE exercises carried out by using Associations on their new build housing stock.

This event promises to be an inspirational forum to anyone who shares an interest in sustainable living, traditional building, woodland crafts and the future of our green and pleasant land.

Tours of Chris and Lucy's cruck-frame straw bale house, will give a valuable insight into this beautiful structure and the appeal of a sustainable woodland lifestyle - built using local materials and traditional techniques by Chris Wall-Palmer, with the valuable input of renowned local natural builder Ben Law.

Lucy explains “ Three of our four children attend Harting School which has always impressed us with its attitude and policies towards sustainability. Chris and I have been planning and building our own sustainable home in our woodland for four years. We are delighted to be able to support the school by opening our home and hosting this fundraising woodland fair. We hope that the Weekend in the Woods will open people's eyes to the possibilities of living in an eco-friendly way - as well as open their pockets to donate money towards the school's outdoor classroom - an extremely exciting and worthwhile project.”

Visitors will be treated to witnessing experienced skilled craftsmen at work as well as big machinery demonstrations. There will be opportunities to take part in hands-on workshops which will educate and appeal to all ages.

The following is a small selection of the stalls and activities:

Big machinery demonstrations

Shingle cutting
Chair making
Forest School workshops
Cob mixing, construction and sculpture
Woodland theme fancy dress

Food and drink will be available to buy throughout the weekend.

Admission to 'Weekend in the Woods' is free, however for those who do come along to enjoy the activities and atmosphere, a voluntary donation would be most welcome and will go towards the construction of the school's outdoor classroom, which has been designed by volunteers and will be built by Ben Law, with his team and the local community.

LIMITED parking will be provided. In keeping with the sustainable theme of the weekend, full cars park for free. This is a real opportunity to experience what can be achieved in a local and sustainable way.

Location: There will be extensive, clear signage to find us at Ingram's Copse woods, Ingram's Green Lane, Elsted Marsh GU29 0LJ

Over the last few years, Harting Primary School has grown in the number of pupils and classes. We have worked hard to build community links and have actively promoted Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC). This roundhouse development will continue both traditions, forging new links with the community, extending learning beyond the classroom and helping to develop the grounds to enrich the children's education. At the same time, it will be a model of sustainable building involving local craftsmen from the school and village community and will provide a space for use by the community beyond the school.

For village youth groups and organisations and those working in partnership with the school, such as the NATIONAL TRUST and GREENING HARTING, we intend that the facility should be available for use for free. PRE-SCHOOL, HEARTWOOD SCHOOL and the SCOUTS, BROWNIES and BEAVERS have all indicated that it is a resource that they would like to use. We would also like the building to become an obvious location for COMMUNITY INITIATIVES such as the South Downs proposed mobile apple press, enabling villagers to work with children to process the year's apple harvest.

For the school community, the roundhouse will provide a SOCIAL FOCUS. At playtimes, it will be a place to meet and chat whilst, during the school day, one of its roles will be to provide a space for CIRCLE TIME, SCHOOL COUNCIL meetings, PHILOSOPHY 4 CHILDREN, debates, general discussion and reflection. It will also provide a PERFORMANCE SPACE for role-play, drama and poetry. Aware that some children do not have the joy of exposure to a wealth of stories, we mean to steadily improve the children's vocabulary of myth and legends and we see the roundhouse providing a wonderful STORYTELLING space for the children and, who knows, perhaps a village storytelling festival! The design is versatile, providing a frame for the children's imagination rather than a straitjacket and supporting a CREATIVE CURRICULUM approach to learning. 'It is an organic and natural response to the needs of the school, the surrounding area steeped in local history, the site and the children's playful, enquiring minds and experimental nature.' The project in rugby and will have something to offer whatever your level of experience, but any Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

"With the popularity of the Passivhaus standard and the arrival in December of the more onerous Part L 2011 regulations, Ultra low energy building has finally gone mainstream. Building solutions which focus on a 'fabric first approach' result in minimised energy demand, but; we ask this month, does it result in a simpler and cheaper heating and hot water system. The answer seems to be No. This open group discussion, will explore the varios options for heating a low energy, A1 or Passivhaus build or renovation will be hosted by expert mechanical engineers, plumbers and passivhaus architects, who will each promote the merits of a particular heating solution. We will use the case study of a detached new build built to 'Near Passive' (SSHD18kWh/m2.a, HL 12kW/m2) with a boiler sized as 8kW for space heat and hot water for the coldest day of January 2011 and discuss the following solutions.
60 to 80 tube Vacuum tube solar, 1000L Thermal store, 15kW condensing gas/LPG boiler, underfloor downstairs towel rails upstairs distribution. optional solid fuel stove with back boiler, power showers. MHRV
10kW Air to water Inverter airpump, 350l cylinder, 400l buffer tank, underfloor distribution. MHRV
Compact air scource Heat pump with in-line duct heater batteries and supplimentary bag fed pellet stove.
Interseasonal Storage, utilising stored summer solar storage in water, masonery or PCM stores.

Hook Norton Low Carbon is having an open homes day to show off some of the projects supported by the LCCC/DECC funding and other "Green" homes in this rural Oxfordshire village.

The day features Hare Cottage Barn, which I've written about extensively on the forum, and also TV Green Architect, Charlie Luxton's own Old Home Superhome project, though to avoid disappointing the ladies, Charlie wont be at home on the day. Technologies from Solar PV, to double glazing, home automation to Hemcrete will be on show.

Summary:

The starting point for the study was a consideration of what impact incentivisation schemes (in this case particularly feed-in tariffs) had on the adoption of low carbon technologies. The study developed further, in that it added an objective to assess the feasibility of producing a unified business process (UBP) focused on aiding individual HAs when deciding which low carbon technologies (LCTs) are appropriate to them.

The study involved two housing associations that had both considered the adoption of innovative sustainability technologies, but ultimately made different investment (in the form of „purchasing? sustainable technologies) decisions.
