We are currently plodding away with the tyres and, although its slow going, hope to be finished before the end of autumn. We hope to get the strawbale walls started when the weather breaks next year.
We have a small caravan that can sleep up to 3 people at a time (any more and its tents in afraid) and can provide food, toilet and shower facilities. Unlike other earthship stuff, we are also not charging anything!
We would also love to hear from anyone who might be interested in running courses on the build. I'm afraid we can't do it ourselves as we are by no means experts on any of the methods we are using.

At Bushey Heath farm on Tideswell Moor we have been showing groups around the site to explore the issues we have faced and how that may affect others who are starting out with installing renewable technologies (Wind Turbine and Ground Source Heat Pump) and other sustainable developments like Rainwater harvesting. We are running a couple of guided tours of the farm with refreshments and a home made lunch.

The tour includes meeting our turbine installer, discussing grants (and possibly meeting a grant manger from the Peak Park) with a plenery session to discuss specific details visitors may have. The demand for these visits has been quite high, the last one was for 31 people! We are now limiting this to 20 to make it more managable. if you are interested mail or call us - all contact details on our website. Next day is planned for late January 2008.

· Are you planning to renovate your house and want to do it in
the most environmental way possible?
· Do you want to slash energy bills and make your house warmer,
brighter and healthier?
· Are you selling your house and want to improve its poor
energy rating?
· Do you want to prepare for life in the climate change century?

18 eco-houses in Oxfordshire (14 of them in Oxford city) are opening their houses to the public to share the techniques, products and possibilities of eco-renovation. This is a superb opportunity to see a wide range of approaches and talk to the house owners directly about their experiences.

The houses cover a wide range of challenging types -including a garden office, a flat, a former council house, a terraced Victorian house, a 17th century cottage in a conservation area, a listed Regency villa and a 1980's developer house.

All of them have dramatically reduced their energy and water use. Some have used standard materials that could be bought at any builders merchant. Others have used new technologies including straw bale and sheep wool insulation, solar panels, wood burners and a heat pump that draws water from the Thames.

underway next month.

Organised by the architecture centre for the North East, Northern Architecture,
the initial event is being held on 12 November at Newcastle Civic Centre and
will look at sustainable cities.

It is the first of five over the next five months that will raise the level of
debate about how the North East should respond to climate change and increasing
pressure on resources, whilst constructing and maintaining long-lasting
buildings and places.

Latest figures suggest that 50% of all the UK's carbon emissions are generated
by buildings and structures, while the building design and construction industry
creates a third of all waste.

Each event will feature a panel of experts from within and outside the region
talking about the many complex sustainability issues that concern regional
architects, engineers, planners, developers, policy makers and others.

The first one kicks off with a panel of experts from design and business
consultancy firm Arup, urban planning and design practice Urban Initiatives and
UK's leading sustainable transport charity, Sustrans looking at ways of creating
long-lasting and eco-friendly neighbourhoods featuring carbon free buildings and
energy efficient systems.

They will also discuss how these impact on people's lives and the first time

Vivarium Co housing group - represented by Hugh Hoffman
Craigmillar Self Build - represented by Garreth Roberts
Andy Ross - Glasgow Carbon Rationing Action Group
Ian Grout - 'Don't wait for the legislation'. Ian is from Dept. of Industrial Design, Glasgow School of Art
Chaired by Patrick Boase, Eco Renovation Network Steering Group

SEDA Event
"Greening your home - what you should know before you start "
Sun 17th, 12.30pm to 1.30pm
Richard Atkins is a Chartered Architect and the Chair of the Scottish Ecological Design Association. His talk will focus on the differences between dwellings, whether flats or houses, new or old, the physical constraints and opportunities for improving their environmental performance.

2. Home-greening
Also advance warning of our first cooperative home-greening consultation. It will be the weekend of 20-21st July and will probably be on the Sunday afternoon at my house where you can see how un-eco my home really is and what I need to do over the next few months/(years?) to gain an eco-halo. The idea is that there are thousands of homes like mine in Glasgow (mid-terrace Edwardian sandstone villa) so the advice that Chris Morgan of SEDA and a colleague will be giving will apply to many people. We can then share the expense of a consultant (in fact I think that eco-renovation network are kindly funding this one…). Since I am hosting I suppose I had better do some catering so expect chocolate cake. …… If this is a success Chris is promising us lots more in different types of housing.]]>

According to the Concrete Centre, Concrete construction can combat the effects of global warming by lowering energy consumption and therefore carbon emissions, thus minimizing the need for future air-conditioning.

If you want to learn more about this, The Concrete Centre, is running an evening seminar on 21st June 2007, at the Queen Mary University College, Clerwood Terrace, Edinburgh EH12 8TS starting at 18:30.

The seminar will outline the principles of passive solar design and how thermal mass can reduce CO2 emissions during the lifetime of a building. It will also look at how other designers have addressed the problems and provided innovative new solutions, as well as discussing the sustainable credentials of using concrete, the material science behind it and the various facts which support its sustainable credentials for manufacture and specification.

The seminar is free to attend.

Oxford Climate Change event http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=294 http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=294 Thu, 17 May 2007 09:42:21 +0100 cmarsham
To celebrate World Environment Day, Oxford City Council is organising Oxford’s own climate change conference on Tuesday 5 June in the Town Hall from 2pm until 8pm.

We want to bring people together who live, work and study in Oxford and encourage them to take simple actions that can make a real difference to climate change.

Professor Lord May of Oxford, former chief scientific advisor to the UK Government and past-President of the Royal Society will give the opening address on the global challenge of climate change.

The other speakers will focus on four areas – What is the problem? What can Local Government do? What can you and your neighbours do? And what can business do?

Mark Lynas, activist, leading journalist and author of the acclaimed “High Tide” and “6 degrees: Our future on a hotter planet” will be talking about the global problem during the opening speeches.

Chris West, Director of UK Climate Impacts Programme will then talk about adapting to climate change and what it means for Oxford.

The opening speeches will be followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session with the speakers. The discussion will be lead by Professor Sue Roaf.

This will be followed by a session on what Local Government can do to help stop climate change including speeches by Councillor John Goddard, Leader of Oxford City Council and Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive, Energy Saving Trust. He will be exploring what other things local government can do and specifically Oxford.

The next session will look at what you and your neighbours can do. Chris Goodall, Oxford based author of “How to Live a Low-carbon Life?” and columnist for the Independent on Sunday will be talking about living a low carbon lifestyle in Oxford. Chris Jardine from the Oxford University Environmental Change Institute will talk about reducing household energy demand. Ian Bacon from the Thames Valley regional renewable energy agency will provide advice on renewable energy technologies available on the market that could be installed in a typical Oxford home. George Marshall of the Oxford based Climate Outreach Information Network will describe how he has successfully “eco-refurbished” his home and Mark Lynas will be talking about what communities can do in Oxford and in particular low carbon Wolvercote.

The next session will profile what some local businesses are doing in Oxford to reduce their impact on the environment and help to tackle climate change. Peter Couchman, Group General Manager of Midcounties Co-operative will talk about what they are doing, Rex Knight of Oxford Brookes University will describe how the University, as a large local employer, is approaching climate change and Craig Simmons, Technical Director of Best Foot Forward, will talk about Carbon/Ecological footprinting and how it can assist businesses, organisations and individuals in understanding and reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

The conference will conclude with a panel discussion and question and answer session formed from a selection of speakers from the programme.

An exhibition will take place between 2pm and 8pm reflecting the themes of the conference featuring sustainable energy installers and advisors, and local carbon reduction projects among a range of other related exhibitors.

There will also be film screenings of the Al Gore film, An Inconvenient Truth at 2pm, 4pm, and 6pm, also in the Town Hall.

If you want to find out what you can do now, please visit the exhibition, which opens at 2pm, and come to the conference, which begins at 4pm. For more information visit http://www.oxfordismyworld.org or telephone Oxford City Council sustainable energy team on 01865 252197.]]>

Steve Read, a bit about him

With a background in environmental science, economics and ecology and a Bsc from Greenwich University, Steve worked for a while as a scientific researcher working on projects such as the cleaning of oil-fouled seabirds, Toxocara Canis prevalence in parks and open spaces around London and methane production from landfill.

He completed a 72 hour design course in Dolgellau in 1991 and 2 years later was awarded his Diploma of Permaculture Design. He became active with the PmC Association in the U.K. as representative for the South-east London Permaculture Group where he worked with others to set up a Local Exchange trading system, a 'box-scheme', courses and training and creating links to business and countryside.

Eventually he moved to Brickhurst Farm in Kent with the objective of setting up market gardens to supply the successful Box scheme. He took over the running of the Permaculture Association, running it from the farm and using energy from renewable resources. The Association later moved on to Chicken Shack in Wales and the farmowner decided to move in a different direction so Steve and his family moved to a derelict barn in Brittany which they have transformed into a house with solar water heating, bio-gas production, wind turbine, 'reedbed' grey water treatment and a Corbett system coppice orchard. The building was developed using traditional techniques and materials such as lime, hemp, clay and wood.

During all this period he has been consistently designing, running courses and giving talks all over the world, continually working to deepen his knowledge and understanding.

Studies of martial arts with Malcolm Edge in London and subsequently Aikido with Gèrard Blaise in Paris and a lifelong interest in Yoga have gone a long way to helping Steve develop both personally and as a Designer. The non-violence of true Aikido, the Ahimsa of Yoga and the Ethics of Permaculture merge seamlessly into one.

Currently he teaches Permaculture, Yoga, running 6 classes a week, and works as a consultant to people wanting to develop permacultures, researches the Coppice Orchard system of food production, works as a greenwood turner using a pole lathe and is busy building Varda style wooden living wagons for those wishing to live lightly on the planet. Steve has also written numerous tracts and articles on Permaculture and ecological development as well as the eco-philosophical book 'A Chivalry of Gardening'

Introduction
Since visiting Taos, New Mexico in October 2005, my involvement in the whole earthship concept has grown. In July 2006 I became a Director of Earthship Biotecture Europe and in November 2006 Europe's First Planning Approval for an Earthship Dwelling, was achieved.

This spring Earthship Biotecture are offering opportunities to work alongside the the Earthship Commando Crew constructing the first residential Earthship in Europe to receive a building permit. The Earthship Commando Crew, led by Michael Reynolds, is based at our world headquarters in Taos, New Mexico. We are currently interviewing for positions in the program. We will be accepting 6 people per week for the duration of the 6 week long build. Fees for the program are $300 per week. Those accepted in to the program may sign up for as many of the six weeks as they choose.
