In his talk ‘Green Deal or No Deal’ at the Retrofit East conference in Cambridge he will say that the Green Deal is a busted flush....

To meet the Government’s carbon reduction targets, the UK needs to retrofit 700,000 properties per year. However, despite being allocated a fund of £244 million, only 12 properties have so far had any work completed under the Green Deal finance scheme....

“The only way to achieve the scale of change necessary is through legislation and compulsory standards. The Government should again look at using Energy Performance Certificates as a basis for creating minimum standards for all homes that are sold or renovated.”

Now I'm leading a local "EcoAction" project for our community and have teamed up with an energy auditor. He has eight sets of blower door test equipment and said he'd train me and the students working on the project how to perform the tests. So we're going to re-test my house next week. I'm guessing it will come in at about 4ACH@50Pa now (having had old leaky skylights replaced). We'll then enter the new data in hot2000 and see how it compares with my measured energy consumption over the last year or so (though I have weekly meter readings going back to August 2005).

Part of the EcoAction project is to measure the baseline consumption of typical properties in the community and then re-assess after any improvements are done. Air leakage reduction is one of the best measures in terms of ROI that can be performed, but measurements have to be taken. So we're going to be offering free blower door tests to people who want to participate. Should be interesting!

Since we moved into our house we've been trying to get the utility bills down. According to our combined gas and electricity bill we use the following:

Average Electricity daily use

21.9 kWh currently
23.6 kWh last year

Average Gas daily use

133 kWh currently
139 kWh last year

Annual Usage:

6944 kWh electricity
29207 kWh gas.

We have 2 adults and 2 teens living in the main house and 2 pensioners living in an attached 1 bed apartment. We therefore have 2x fridges, 2x freezers, 2x washing machines, etc.

I can't find any figures online that provide decent average UK energay useage in order to see if we are using excessive amounts of electricity/gas (I know we're not an 'average' family, but it would give us a ball-park to work from).

I also feel that I have done as much as I can to lower our electricity bills (gas bill reduction is on-going with insulation, better glazing, etc.) as we have A+++ rated white goods, LED lighting almost everywhere, low energy consumer goods. I'm therefore struggling to think of other ways we could reduce our electricity consumption, except to get rid of the clothes dryer and get one powered by gas or that uses heat pump technology.

Does anyone have any ideas on our consumption figures and/or how to reduce it?

Thanks. :)]]>

Notes:
*These suppliers also offer a dark green tariff that would have the same impact as the Good Energy one.
Prices were the latest standard online dual fuel tariff including imminent price rises where applicable, but not including special offers. For simplicity some resellers piggybacking on big 6 companies like SSE have been lumped together even if their prices differ. It's the relative cleanliness we're interested here.
CO2 intensity is based on (kg kWh-1: Coal=0.91, Gas=0.36, Other=0.61. Overall CO2 figure is base don UK annual average of 3300kWh.
External costs are the total impact of GWP, damage to forestry, buildings, health, waste handling etc expressed as a figure in p kWh-1 (Ref:
Pearce, D.W., Bann, C. and Georgiou, S. (1992) The Social Costs of Fuel Cycles, Report to
the UK Department of Energy,). Figures used were: Nuclear=0.48, Gas=0.39, Coal=5.4, Renewable=0.055, Other = 6.05). Other estimates of external cost are available, but all follow the same pattern of low costs for renewables, medium for gas and nuke, and high for coal and oil, so the effect is the same.

Some of my thoughts:
Even within the Big 6 energy companies (not known for their greenness) there’s a wide variation in the quality of the supply. When you look at just CO2, EDF and British Gas are surprisingly good, getting almost as low as some of the smaller specialist green suppliers. However, EDF only gets so low because of all their nuclear plants, and this shows in the overall impact where they fall back into the pack of dirty offenders. In the long run, the green suppliers like Good Energy, LoCO2, Green Energy UK and Ecotricity all come out well ahead, although British Gas is actually not far off them (and is cheap!).

Npower is the worst of the big six, being both dirty and expensive. But if you want the absolute worst deal in Britain you’ll be heading off to First Utility.

Scotland is a country keen to promote it’s renewable resources but unfortunately the Scottish companies seem to be topping up their decent renewable percentages with a lot of coal, so end up being some of the dirtiest. Oops.

Ovo are the cheapest overall, but LoCO2 only cost £1 more a year and emit about half as much CO2. If you go with Ovo, use their proper green tariff, as their standard one is pretty dirty.]]>

I asked whether any of the software packages calculate changes in entropy, the related 'free energy' variables, or other indicators of a building's thermodynamic efficiency. It would be good to know how close our buildings are, to the limits set by physics.

Fostertom - who suggested creating this new thread - restated the issue in terms of high-grade vs low-grade energy. Useful concepts, I think.

Barney said that in the chemical industry, thermodynamically wasteful processes are known as pinch points, and chemical engineers have software for analysing them.

Djh pointed out that the term 'exergy' is widely used as a term for available or usable energy, though (thanks, Wikipedia) I understand that different people use the term with different meanings. However, that doesn't stop 'exergy' being a useful button for making governments cough up money.

So here we are on planet Earth, astride a mighty energy-flow, from the sun's surface at 6000K to the depths of space at 3K. We can use it efficiently or we can waste it. The question I would like to ask is: How can we exploit ideas of thermodynamic efficiency, entropy, free energy, exergy - whatever - in the design, construction and use of buildings?]]>

I think that by now we ought to know how much energy we are using and a national energy use survey would be a an essential part of any scheme to monitor reduction.

I see we have a lot of discussion about members energy use monitoring but we are the good guys what about the country as a whole

I could see an that it would be useful if not essential for everyone to know what their energy use is in say kWh/m2/y

From there we could road map our way into the future with targets based on existing energy use and necessary savings.

Even a largish random sample would be helpful but I reckon that everyone should know how much they are using and be able to compare with others.]]>

I'm looking for a building to use for assessment as part of an Undergraduate Module at the University of Glamorgan. The building will be dynamically modelled using TAS

The exact details of what is to be done and why are yet to be decided though at the very least the willing contributor could expect to get predicted energy consumption for various design options and strategies. In the past the students have been asked to dynamically model a [new] minimum compliance building as a base case, and then to make changes to get to passive house levels of design. I'm thinking of changing it this year to examining and upgrading an older existing building, maybe to passive house levels or perhaps in the context of the Green Deal

If there is anyone interested it doesn't matter whether the house is built or at a design stage but I would need electronic CAD drawings. I'd also welcome input as to what you all think about the focus of such a project.

Please feel free to ask or whisper any questions

Thanks in advance

Our build consists of large (80m2 footprint) extension to an old cottage(60m2 footprint), with all all be built to highest standards of insulation and best practice air tightness, whilst the new has been relatively easy to construct to the exacting low energy standards the old has tested my resolve on many occasion, and we were advised at the start that to try and convert this old build to full PH standards would be very expensive and almost impossible.

However with the discovery of the slightly lesser PH enphit, maybe it would worthwhile? I have downloaded the PHPP demo, but it seems hard work maybe due to demo version. So a few Qs

2 what is the cost of the complete assessment?

Pretty good I'd have thought....."computer says no". It fails as the 'multifuel' log boiler stove has an efficiency of 71%, below some magical figure, and also the TER is 4kgCO2/m2.

Re-working the fuels sorces (primary now electric) it passes;

SAP rating=93%

Ignoring the bonkers system that fails a more efficient house, producing 1/3 of the CO2, can anyone point me to the regs which state a minimum value for the boiler efficiency. Cataloging thermal bridging details http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=9401 http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=9401 Tue, 31 Jul 2012 12:22:37 +0100 Bft
How is everyone else managing. Surely it is not practical to calculate all the bridging details for each dwelling or development.

The thermal bridging has such a large effect on the calculation.]]>

But there is a problem as we now have A+, A++, and even A+++

It seems to be a system that is falling apart, also no account of total use, a small fridge uses less than a USA style fridge freezer.

Do we need a new appliance rating system?]]>
porch dilema in rdSAP http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=9155 http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=9155 Fri, 01 Jun 2012 09:52:47 +0100 jms452
The porch covers an old & drafty (but pretty) front door and about 15m2 of mostly sold wall with 0.2 walls, 0.1 floor, 0.15 roof, 0.7 window and 1.0 door to the point where is essentially at internal temperatures without heating. It is also built into an interior corner so actually reduces the wall are of the house (see diagram)

I am gutted that after all our effort to address this (last) thermal weak point the assessment assumes that the porch is outside!

Is there a magic phrase I can use when we next have an EPC conducted to explain the lunacy of this to the assessor as this is going to make achieving an A impossible!]]>

Can you add or change any of my questions -- max no of questions is ten

Survey

Have you installed any energy saving measures during the past twelve months?

Do you have any solar panels on your home?

How much Loft insulation do you have? 100mm 200mm 300mm? more?

Are your walls insulated any better now than when the house was built?

Do you have double glazing ? or triple glazing?

Are your windows and doors draught proofed?

Is your boiler a condensing type one?]]>
My SAP Assessment - should I be concerned http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=9407 http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=9407 Thu, 02 Aug 2012 10:43:15 +0100 Pugliese
Should I be concerned that there are apparent errors like 6 x air changes when it should be 0.6 or the fact that it will all come out in the post build SAP, shall I just move on.

It has been mentioned on this forum that as a tool for assessing our heating needs it is not much good, so I am wondering if analysing it all and picking up all the errors is really worth it.

Also is there a list anywhere of target values for CO2 emissions, fabric heat loss and Space heating requirement per m² (kWh/m²/year)? It would be nice to understand how the house compares to the norm.]]>

The calculations are ok and i have a reasonable grasp of using the program and its many flaws and glitches.

I often have problems with interstitial condesation and am looking to get a better understanding and knowledge of the problems how to overcome them.

I am also very interested in Passiv Haus and have looked into becoming a Passiv Haus designer but wish to gain more knowledge and a solid understanding of the basics before I pursue that avenue any further.

Any help or links to teaching aids / tutorials etc would be great

Thanks in advance]]>
Boiler sizing from Sap software help please http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=8887 http://www.greenbuildingforum.co.uk/newforum/comments.php?DiscussionID=8887 Tue, 03 Apr 2012 10:34:46 +0100 kebabman that was kindly mentioned recently and hopefully I have made an acceptably accurate inputting of data for my house.
I am now wanting to know how I size a boiler from the results. I guess I should be looking at the "energy consumed by build kWh" in the SAP section? For the worst month I get a total figure of 6200 kWh, so do I divide this by say 30 days. I am then wondering how many hours I then divide by. If I divide by say 15 hours I get a figure of 13.77kWh.
The house is listed, about 250m2 floor area, rubble stone walls with no wall insulation but I have put in that we hopefully will be able to put d/g into most windows and can insulate the roof pretty well and will draughtproof as well as possible. The EPC says F which seems about right.
I used some other boiler calculators a while ago and got a figure of around 28kW for boiler size. But obviously this software should be far more accurate if I have entered the data correctly.
Does anyone live in a house of similar construction and so could let me know their boiler size/heating requirements and their floor area please?
Any comments regarding the kWh figure as it sound too low to me.
Cheers
Andrew

PS I guess that I am really after the hourly heating requirement so that I can see how often a thermal store will need to be charged up by a biomass boiler that would obviously have a far higher kw output than the hourly heat requirement.]]>
